Anybody ever removed bunk?

My brother got a bunch of those plastic Rubbermaid type cabinets and put them on the upper bunk after removing the mattress. He used some nylon straps to secure them and took the time to do it right and make it look good. He then put latches on the cabinets to keep them from coming open going down the road.

It's really functional and gives him A LOT more storage where things are secured and not floating around the cab where they could become potential projectiles.

He also has a curtain rod running across the top of the sleeper some way to keep most of his clothes hung up and a little more wrinkle free. You have to use the step like you're getting into the top bunk to get to the clothes, but it sure does free up more space and uses all that empty space in the top of that huge Condo sleeper.

Me, I don't have to worry about it. I've got a little bitty flat top right now, and it doesn't have any cabinetry at all. I did remove the passenger seat, but I'm thinking of replacing it with something else.

My Dodge pickup has a small seat in the middle that folds down to make a platform with a huge storage box inside. I'm thinking of going to a salvage and getting one of those and then putting it on a stationary stand. I'm thinking of making the stand with a drawer in it. I'd like to be able to put the seat down, allowing me to sit right behind it on the bunk and use it as a desk. Maybe a printer/scanner under the seat. I'd have a place to do a little paper work, a place to store some stuff, and a seat, too, if I really needed it.

 

I'm surprised none of the truck makers specifically design a truck for just one person. They could make it a lot more comfortable if they did away the idea of having two people in the truck.

 

Not sure about the others but you can order a KW however you wish. We have a W9 with a standup 62" sleeper with one bed. Most don't order them that way because it's easier to remove than to add later. I'm pretty sure you can order one seat also but it's smarter to remove it for your needs than to kill the resale value later.

 

Going the Peterbilt route huh?

the t600 i once drove didn't come with a bunk. nor did it have mounts for such.

now i drive a w9. and it's 2000 lbs heavier. 32,500 with full tanks. i've never had a problem pulling 48k but i USED to pull a flat.

now i'm pulling a tank and 77,000 is my limit without making the drives heavy. apparently we have a 6000 gallon minimum we must pull. which means now i have to roll across the scales on less then 1/8 tanks to keep the drives legal. and that's with the fifth wheel ALL THE WAY FORWARD making the steers a little heavier then i would like to see.

too bad tanks don't have sliding axles. cuz that would be a big help. those axles are 3,500 light.

 

Where is a good place that does the hardwood floor work? I've seen high end show trucks with those floors and would love to replace the grooved rubber mud and dirt magnet flooring that is in there now.

Also would like to rip out the bottom bunk and put in a lazyboy recliner, I sleep in those like a baby.

My K100 didn't come with a top bunk. I'm pretty glad since I'm putting in an 8" thick mattress instead of the stock 5".

My truck currently has the interior stripped. Pretty much all that's left outside of the instruments/dash components is the passenger and drivers seat and doghouse cover. I'd feel pretty confident in being able to haul close to 50,000lbs on a flatbed if I didn't have a stretched frame, an 89" conventional sleeper, and 350 gallon tanks on it.

 

i have a 200 watt space heater that will drain 4 brand new batteries in 3 hours.

an a/c pulls 350 watts, so you're gonna need a LOT of batteries.

2 months ago i figured out that the truck has a furnace. so i no longer use the space heater.

now i just gotta figure out my cooling options for summer.
