I was at the T/A in Concordia MO today and decided to buy a newspaper to read while enjoying breakfast. On the newspaper itself the price was printed "$0.75 (includes sales tax)". I'm sure you could imagine my surprise when I went to pay for the newspaper and found out it was $0.81 since T/A charged sales tax on it.

So if the price already included sales tax, can T/A charge sales tax a second time? I'm thinking no but I'm also sure there's a legal reason why they can.

Reason why I read the news online, the printed media is over priced and taxed to death.

As long as there is a Sunday paper, there will always be recycling loads. :)

No, they can't tax it twice, Obviously, their "computer" isn't set up to reject the item as having already been taxed. And I'm sure the cashier would freak out if you called them on it, just like they freak out if you pay with a hundred dollar bill for a ten dollar item and don't have the register compute the change.

The paper most likely has state tax already in it and you were charged local tax. Could be wrong but I figured I throw that in.
