The day my upgrade class finished Greyhound canceled all their service because of icy roads. Because I still had that funky Indiana license I could not get a truck till I went home and transferred to my home state. Once I did that Karen called me and told me to head up to Roanoke. That trip was an adventure because of all the icy roads in Virginia. I remember sitting for over 12 hours in the Charlotte bus terminal.

I worked for them a long time ago and it doesn't pay to think about this stuff. You'll get a dirty old truck when you start and a new one after you have been there awhile. That's all you need to know.

I'm a new driver myself and they have offered me a job also. Nosing around I found that this company has been loosing money for a while now. New trucks? Don't see how that works with the loss of steady income they are claiming.....Heads up they are off my list!

Who the hell do you think you are to decide what somebody needs or does not need to know? Also you are DEAD WRONG! I know several new upgrades that got nearly new trucks. If I am not mistaken one driver still posts in here!

I don't think Silverspur meant anything bad. He's right. Unless policy has changed, They will get a grimy old beat up truck. Unless that's all they have for them to drive. He wasn't fibbin.

You sound like the typical USA driver starting out your post with "who the hell do you think you are..." That's all the USA drivers do is sit around the break rooms at their terminals and say "who the hell do you think you are.." and you do nothing but talk about nothing that is of any consequence and then you go out and have accidents and you get canned after about 6 months and then you hang out at the terminal trying to pick fights while you are waiting for the cab to take you to the Greyhound bus station for your 3 day trip back to your new job at Burger King where you are going to sing :"Hold your pickle, toss your lettuce, special orders don't upset us, all we ask is that you let us have it our way, have it our way."
That's the reason the company is broke is because they don't have enough drivers that know how to take care of business.
And you say you know some "upgrades". In 10 years there I never heard that word once. Did you invent it while you were sitting around the break room wasting your time talking and complaining and not producing?

No Klatu he is not right. If USA Truck had a no new truck policy for upgrades they would not be getting them. I remember sitting in a safety meeting in Vandalia listening to several older drivers ######## because new drivers were getting the at the time new Petes and KWs. I also want to remember somebody that posts in here commenting on getting a nearly new Freightliner right out of upgrade too. I actually got a nice truck right out of upgrade myself, it laid down on me about 3 months later though. I did have to take an old trade truck from Roanoke to Van Buren. This truck was not however my assigned truck and after getting there I got my assigned truck. I do think the company wants to keep these new drivers out of the newer equipment however with all the breakdowns and empty trucks all over the country at dealers etc etc it becomes hard to do.

No I wasn't told truck numbers. She just called me in the office before they had the numbers and asked if I'd prefer to pickup a truck assignment in W Memphis or Atlanta. It waas the same time that she asked if I wanted to get routed home or go out. I chose to go straight out as I'd been off for 4-5 days prior to coming back for upgrade.

Wow, way to generalize huh? I don't hang out at terminals and I rarely get into conversations with drivers in the breakrooms. Too many weirdos that stay up late and babble. Too many supertrucker stories, etc. If my truck needs repairs, I call ahead to get it on the list to minimize my wait time. Then I find a hiding spot and go to sleep. No accidents, no arrogance, none of the above.
As far as "upgrades" go. Thats been the standard term for students coming off of trainer trucks for at least 2 years. I'm certain that its not a recent invention either as my trainer had worked there for 5 when I met him and he talked of "upgrading" from a trainer's truck to his own. Since you seem certain though, what was the correct term during your stay?
