I have never once heard of a homeless person obtaining a CDL and getting a job as a truck driver. A lot of the training companies won't even hire someone if they have a one or two month gap in their three year work history.

I knew of a woman who was homeless and went to work for Werner when I was there... I remember I was in the office to get my first truck, there was a woman in there in front of me waiting to get a trainer...The manager ask her what her adress was, and she said she lived at the homeless shelter just down the road...This was at Lancaster Tx...The manager just kinda said,, oh ok,, no problem...and I saw her there that evening get in the truck with someone and leave....Now,, I don't know when and where she got her license.,, could have had it way before she became homeless. Several people there was talking about Werner hiring homeless people..But I only know of that one person.

I certainly meet plenty of drivers that live in their trucks. Even met TWO women living out of a truck when I was with Conway. I don't know how many start out homeless but sure is alot that end up that way.

I was thinking more...living under a bridge homeless. Walk up to a payphone and call a trucking company for a job. Hard to maintain a DL with a driving record or have a job history to be hired by a training company. As for the employed homeless living a truck, yea I think I would pass on that but to each their own. After about four or five days I've had about enough of that. Then I'm ready to go again after a few days off.

I drove for Knight out of Phoenix and I never had a problem getting home. I think this is the one terminal that can do that.

Glad you are happy with your position; but by industry standards, $700 a week is nothing. I made more than that teaching English to Vietnamese students for 30 hours a week. I make on average $1800 a week with paper logs (not always legal-but looking legal). My rate is 45 cents for all miles and I run around 4,000 a week. Not for everyone-but decent money for those who can and are willing to run hard. I was making 30 cents for Caretta back in 1991 at over 3,000 a week. Thus, your $ 700 a week is really survival pay. For 5 years experience why are you making only that amount? For crying-out-loud, Purty Bros. pays 42 cents to name just one company where you can make more. Maybe you are happy with that as it seems.
