So, I've been researching the trucking industry for months now, and I found 3 companies I'd like to get some longevity with and season my trucking skills. But my long term goal is either to own my own truck or join the private fleet. But I keep hearing rumors about outsourcing load contacts to other companies. In 5-7 years time, will I still be able to become a Wal-Mart driver?

Look for one of the better "outsourcing" companies. Someone has to haul the loads and all the companies are not all bad. If you're talking to a recruiter stop. Go out on your own and find the job yourself. You can ask general questions here then zone in on a company and ask the people that work there. Find out the company's turnover rate, how often do they buy new trucks, how well their safety dept. works, and how well the shop takes care of the equipment. Then start looking at their benefits. How's their pay compared to others doing the same work, what kind of medical and dental benefits do they have, holidays and pay, vacation, hometime, do they pay for some of your schooling if you go, etc etc. And in general are there more than just a couple of drivers that like the company?

Once you know what type of trucking you want to get into the questions are endless. However, make your selection specific like heavy haul or hazmat. You can widen your search a little depending on want you want to go into. If you want to haul hazmat then you can pick flatbed, vans, or even tankers. It will all depend on what you want in a company. But you can also narrow your search and go for hazmat in tankers. Or heavy haul with specialized trailers. Some may seem far off but everyone had to start somewhere and if you set you goal after a specific type then stick with it.

Wal-Mart private fleet isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.. They outsource their freight because they're so picky in who they hire and don't have a quarter of the trucks to cover all their freight! Wal-Mart jobs are very hard to get, VERY HARD!!

Really I thought it was because they figured out which dc's where it was actually more profitable to have someone like crete swift etc.. to haul the majority of the outbound store freight. then their own private fleet.
I wouldn't want to work directly for wm as a company driver these day's however that being said you'l never have to worry about parking if you did work for them. Id imagine the hometime ,apu trucks and parking are the biggest non pay related perks in working for wm .

Oh WM pay is good BUT money isn't everything for all of us and toting that corporate company line with crossed "T"'s and doted "i"'s with an ironed tucked in shirt isn't for all of us. I'll take $65,000 grand hauling fuel any day before a job with Wal Mart Transportation and yes I know WM drivers make more. Again...don't care.

Too bad they aren't as picky about who is loading and unloading (i.e. destroying) the trailers.
