the trailer suspension has alot to with things too. If a guy rolls the gear all the way down to drop an empty, then it gets loaded and he/whoever comes back to hook up to it, he will be cranking it down, because the trailer suspension is compressed=raises the nose.
There are alot of people that drop the same loaded or empty, which usually creates problems for the next guy, this is an age old problem that will never change
landing gear

Must have special fifth wheel ! One fifth with out ears ? They are designed to lift 3 to 4 inches. I leave the trailer at 41 inches and you come by and your fifth wheel is 42 inches (standard) , you are golden ! Should not be any weight on the legs. And your truck IS stronger than your back. So not having a dump valve is a non issue.

I drop mine well below two inches. I also expect my fifth wheel to pick up the trailer to a point where the feet of the landing gear are off the ground. I don't want to drag the gear when I do a pull test. Plus I don't want to put strain against the legs, which makes it harder to retract the gear.

They can only lift 3-4 inches if you have a tractor air dump system!!! For some of those that do, I've seen them back in, dump the bags, then go out, crank down and drop (loaded no less). THIS IS NOT PROPER. Maybe they misunderstand the entire process or maybe they think they're a super-trucker like you, I don't know. But do it your way

I do it like STexas does but I dump my air when I pull out. I usually dump it when hooking up but put air back in when the fifth wheel is a few inches from the pin. I get tired of seeing all the grease on my fifth wheel get wiped off when you use the fifth wheel to pick the landing gear off the ground.

Wow some people really like to do a lot of extra work. I carry 2 home build plywood mini ramps, when a trailer is too high I put them back of my drives and roll up them latch and done crank up the landing gear. Dropping a trailer lower landing gear so it is just about to touch the ground, let air out of system.
