The 2007 to 2010 models (as with all engine makes) have EGR problems. I have had my 07 replaced three times. BUT if done properly and all the codes are cleared when replaced, they will have a longer life. With that said, I am considering buying a new Volvo 780 with a D13 engine and the Volvo I-drive transmission, which they are having nearly no problems with. Fuel mileage is reported to be 8 to 8.5 mpg at 65 mph. The I-drive works efficiently at 65 mph at 1200 rpm. And if you will have your wife along, she will appreciate having a table and storage space as mine does. We have a 3.2 cuft micro fridge, microwave and a pantry.
The good thing about Volvo is it is similar to buying a Chevy or a Ford. You don't go to a Chevy dealer to work on your Ford nor vice versa. Yes, for engine and electrical repair you will have to go to Volvo. However, you don't get run of the mill techs to work on your truck either. Volvo has always had the parts I needed and my down time has been at a minimum. Even better, with the new Volvos is you can have them run a diagnostic while going down the road and they can pre-order any part and have it available for your chosen dealership to get a repair.
In comparison I have driven Freightliners and had to wait on basic parts for up to a week. My 2010 Columbia left me stranded in central Oregon for a week due to a blown turbo. I have seen other drivers with Freightliners, KW and Pete stuck at TA and Petro for several days while the local dealership ordered in parts. Volvo had the parts I needed and delivered the same day.
Hope this helps. -
That's cool that Volvo can do the diagnostic on the new Volvo's while you are driving. I was looking at a 2009 with a D13 or a 2007 with a D12, Both in the mid 400k mileage range. I am not going to run CA so I'm leaning more toward the 07. I'm not a big fan of the auto transmissions whether they are I shift or ultrashift or whatever they want to call them. That is the main reason I want to trade the truck I have now. I bought it for my driver, but he is no longer my driver and now I have to drive it. LESSON LEARNED!! Don't buy a truck unless you would drive it yourself. I like the idea of 8 to 8.5 MPG though, that is where your profit is. Unfortunately I cannot afford the new truck payment. Thanks for input gentlemenfarmer.

Total horror stories associated with this engine( Volvo D16). Resale value is totally in the toilet according to several past owners in our 300 truck owner operator fleet. One fellow bought one brand new, had to sue Volvo to take it on trade for a Cummins powered equivilent.

I own a 2008 780 with D13; 13 Eaton manual ; great team truck, (my last was a Volvo 770) i have right now 1,105,000 miles on original motor ,i'm still getting 8-9 MPG. I had problems with emission sensors ,manifold ,injextor caps. ,not the EGR/DPF: honestly I'm telling you, I replaced the EGR and DPF filter for first time last year after 900,000miles .If I would
need a truck I would buy same motor transmission again; this volvo D13 is maybe the best motor in fuel economy on truck market today;
Isidewinder767 Thanks this.
