Stopped here for the night on the way to Topeka. As usual the lounge is full of whiners. They also must have given the training program a large adrenalin boost along with all new hires in general. Bunch of people hanging about in the lounge waiting on cab rides to Meadors or trainers to show up in the next day or so. On a funny note, whoever put the scales in front of the vending machines gave me a huge kick. I almost laughed myself to tears! I'm not even certain if Orientation or Safety meant that as a joke or a serious reminder to be health conscious!

I am not in the best of shape (6 ft 220 lbs) but I am well aware the beastly large driver will become a dinosaur in the near future. DOT physicals are getting tougher and tougher and squeezing the beltline. -
You are absolutley correct about DOT physicals. The sleep study will become mandotory if your BMI is out of whack.

nothin but whiners at all our terminals chem, very rarely can you run into a decent person to talk to.Lots of big talkers talking about how they are gonna show them whos boss lmao, been hearing it for going on 7 years now
chemsoldier1 Thanks this. -
Only way to show the the brass at USA who is boss is to get the hell away from that company !!! Too many broken promises, and before you old timers start jumping all over that statement, I am no spring chicken, been around the block several times. Maybe the fact that so many are whinning is because they are pissed, I realize usa is a starter company but pay the drivers a decent wage and you will have happy drivers. I was smart got the hell out of dodge, now work at a local company, home 2 days a week and run out west, I am so much happier and making decent money !!!
highwayprisoner Thanks this. -
Will someone please what starter company does pay decent, and has good home time?
-
They are out there you just have to look, some local companies will hire you right out of school and train you. Big companies like usa, werner, swift, just take advantage of young drivers, DON'T LET THEM.

Define decent wage when applied to student drivers? I believe they start at $.26 or $.27/mile during the training program. I also understand they have a guaranteed gross of $600/week during the first couple months of employment. How is that taking advantage of somebody with no experience? In my opinion, its actually fairly competitive for newbies, as the Werner drivers I've talked to are still starting out at around $.22/mile. Not to mention that we have APUs and paper logs.
I'm not trying to bash you here but it seems that everybody always says that training companies screw over trainees on pay. Well my answer to that is that the company is taking a huge risk on somebody and they are giving you the opportunity to build a resume. If we paid trainees $.28-$.30/mile to start out then the more experienced drivers would start saying that $.34-$.36/mile was not enough because the rookie pay was too close. Then they'd want it bumped up. Then you get into that range closer to $.40/mile which is what the million milers and such demand and you run out of room to find incentive to keep those guys. It has to be a gradual process and you must work your way up the food chain. I agree that the newbies should not be made to run ragged just to starve on a miniscule paycheck, but if we take the carrot off the stick and just toss it to them then there is nothing to work forward for. In all fairness, (name your favorite fast food joint) starts out their trainees by cleaning the dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms. I'm pretty sure they start at minimum wage, not the same they are paying the cashier. -
In the mean time these companies are making millions ( in the case of usa losing millions) off the backs of these newbies. Gee I wonder why they can not keep drivers??? There is a big problem somewher but where??? .26 -.27 per mile is funny even .34 per mile is funny, keep trucking chem and have fun in that low wage job with usa !!! Not bashing you buddy!!! whatever floats your boat !!

oh by the way chem usa and the other companies taking a big risk as you say are getting kickbacks from the federal government for taking those risks, so in other words pay the drivers a little more.
