Untreated sleep apnea can lead to heart problems, stroke, early death. not very attractive alternatives. If he can't tolerate a CPAP. tell him to do what I did. I had my sleep doctor put me on a Bi-PAP. That's a Bi level positive air pressure device. It has two settings the one for breathing in & a lower one for when he exhales. I got on one of those and now I can't sleep without it either. And it's definitely better that leaving apnea untreated.

If I suspect I may be a sleep apnea sufferer , how do I know with out going for a test.
I do wake up a number of times a night and my wife says I often jerk and gasp.
I have the BMI and neck size thing going and am on thyroid medication.
I'm not against getting tested but is what I'm describing Apnea or am I being paranoid? -
jerking and gasping are big indicators. Was the same for me. Also more tired upon awakening than when I went to sleep. Drooling. Waking with headaches sometimes. heavy snoring.upnorthwpg and king Q Thank this.

"micro naps" at a red light you doze, always tired, snoring. those were my semptoms. snoring didn't start till i had my toncils removed at age 36
king Q Thanks this. -
I was lucky enough to catch my friend at a truck stop and after sleeping with him I noticed he too has sleep apenea.I would think for single drivers that might be hard to figure out if you have sleep apnea.Your husband might want to try a different style mask.I wear a full face mask that doesnt dry me out like the other one did

My dumb question is, since sleep apnea is weight related, in many cases, why guys don't try to lose some darn weight? Then you won't fall within the BMI and neck measurement index. I am close to the BMI index and have started working on my weight. Then this apnea issue can be treated like the medical issue it is. Instead of these companies helping their neighborhood sleep study center get rich.
-
Its not 100% weight related. Any one can have it. I've seen fattys pass and skinny fail.

I passed with 97% efficiency. I'm 5'6 and was 350lbs when I got my test done

One of the side effects of sleep apnea is weight gain.
It apparently has something to do with upsetting some enzyme or hormone production or balance.
This results in weight gain.
I'm not sure exactly how this all works but have heard that this is the case.
Being fat and sleep apnea feed off each other in no small way. -
I guess my last post wasn't entirely clear. I know sleep apnea as a medical issue, isn't totally weight related. But these companies, and the govt, are treating it as if it is. That's why they are linking it to BMI and neck size. I haven't heard of any companies sending thinner guys to take the sleep study. We all know we need to lose weight, myself included. And if we all did, for our own health, it would put trucking companies out of the sleep study business and return sleep apnea to being a medical condition that was between us and our doctor.
