I'll be coming in through Maryland to the frst stop in Hainesport, NJ then to White Plains, NY then finally to Holbrook, NY.
Is there anything about this route that I need to know? I've never been to the big island.
How bad could it be?
I read about low clearances and a few other things I probably forgot.
There isn't much else coming out of my area, but I may turn this down 'cause I'm a big chicken
Agent wasn't sure who would be open on Friday. I would love to get this load off the trailer, but Monday is more realistic.
I could use some pointers.

It can get real bad, but relax... personally, I think Atlanta is worse.
The best advice I can give you is to try to get in before everyone else, get unloaded, and be making your way out as everyone else is heading in.
I really don't remember what the routes were, but be 110% certain of the route to your customer. You really don't have room for error on this one. -
Park ways are for cars only. If you have a truck GPS it will only route you on the truck roads. The tolls will run you $200 before you get out of the city. You need to factor that into your costs. One last thin, the 4 wheelers have no laws there, they do whatever they want. Good luck
blazer1, NavigatorWife and Dinomite Thank this. -
If you're coming in through the southern, going in over the Verrazano- Narrows bridge & out on the George Washington will save you a bunch on tolls ( and it IS expensive). No way to escape tolls going onto Long Island though. Other than that just remember your professionalism & amp it up big. More patience, more sense of humor. It has a bad rep, but personally I'd rather go there than Boston, or Miami. The previous advice is worth remembering : get in and out as early as you can...distinct lack of parking in that particular part of the world.

Your going to avoid the worst parts of the NYC experience. Don't get in a hurry and don't get distracted. The lanes on the highways and thoroughfares are narrow and rough. Make some phone calls to the receivers. Ask them their recommendations. Can you come in early and safely park at the first stop in Jersey? If you don't have directions on your load screen, ask them what is recommended route. Double and triple check your directions so you have them practically memorized and know they at least appear valid based on looking at google maps and perhaps your GPS, any discrepancies, find out why. The phone is your friend if you can talk to somebody who gives a dam n.
If you don't have ez-pass, don't go in with less then $300 cash. That's enough for tolls out, food, emergency money for the unexpected whatever, etc
Don't let your guard down, and pay constant attention and be prepared for anything and hope for the best. -
when you are done at your n.j. Stop, take the new jersey turnpike north to i287 north , cross into new york, take i87/i287 south go over tappan zee bridge, at exit 8 i87 and i287 split, take i 287 into white plains, when your done in white plains, get back on i287 east it ends at i95, take i95 south to throggs neck bridge , go over bridge take clearview expressway to i495 east that will take you to holbrook, pay attention to all signs and do not get on any parkways, good luck, stay on the route i told you and you wont have any problemsvolvodriver01, porjotrucker, d o g and 6 others Thank this.

What everyone else is saying.
Take the Goethals (278) across Staten Island to the Verrazano and follow the BQE up. Stay in the middle lane (when you approach the where Battery Tunnel heads to the left, the two right lanes go right for the BQE, the left lane becomes 'truck restricted', but not for a while). The Brooklyn Bridge overpass is signed as 12'2, but you'll fit.
People WILL cut you off. Take your time, and expect it. Also, if you need to change lanes, just signal and start edging over. They will get the hint. Don't ever expect someone in NYC to give 73' of unoccupied space when busy.
I ran through there in rush hour many times. It's not nearly as bad as the horror stories make it out to be.
Also, as stated, when you leave, head out the Throgs Neck Bridge (295) to the Cross Bronx (95) south to the GW and into NJ that way. The westbound Verrazano bridge is now $80 cash.
If you have EZ Pass and cross the Goethals before 6am, you'll get a discount on the toll. If you pay cash, I believe it's $70 or $75 now no matter what time of day or night. The Verrazano east bound onto LI is free. The Whitestone, Throgs Neck, or RFK/Triborough bridges in the Bronx are now $40 cash and non-NY EZ Pass. -
