I have found the biggest danger with split breaking is you need to be close enough to your next stop to make it in one 11 hour driving period. Otherwise you may find yourself 60 miles away needing to take a 2 hour break before you can get there and wind up late.

You need to trip plan or else it's going to fail or you're going to violate. I get calls all hours of the night asking how much time a driver will pick up if they split. I wish PeopleNet would auto calculate for the drivers to let them see what they are picking up. I'm also of the mind that drivers should review their days before certifying them, and once they certify that their logs are they way they want them there should be no ability to edit them, by anyone for any reason.

Yep, 11 is 11 by any other name. But I have used it as a 2 8 2 and made ontime delivery where another driver might have needed to do 10 10 to make it.
I have the qualcomm, there is a Clocks screen showing Drive time remaining, On Duty remaining and 70 remaining. For the split breakers, as long as there is more On Duty time remaining, they will have the full compliment of their 11 to work with on either side of the splits.
If they have more Drive time remaining than what is in the On Duty bank, time is ticking ticking ticking no matter what they do, even logging off duty.
Trip planning, what I did was buy a cheap log book from the truck stop. Each page has 5 24 hour grids. Each grid represents a day, plot when the pick up time is in blue ink with conventional 11/14 all the way to delivery, then plot split breaks in with red ink and compare which will work best.Cranky Yankee and Meltom Thank this. -
