First - "Not being able to have 2 logs," is an old wives tale. You can't have a FALSE log. So you can't have one log with what you did and another for LE to see. That's the reason most people keep 2 logs. If you had two logs and the both said the same thing, then you are fine. I know of no rule that even hints at it being wrong to have 2 log books.

If you are running an On Board Recording Device, you are required to keep - "(2) A supply of blank driver's records of duty status graph-grids sufficient to record the driver's duty status and other related information for the duration of the current trip." That's so if your onboard computer goes down, you have a means to continue to keep a log book.

I'm in LE and I seldom ever check if drivers have back up copies of logs. (I've just got more important things to do) If I did and you produced a phone log with the proper graph, then I'd certainly accept it. To my mind it fulfills the requirement for a back up log if your main system goes down. More and more, we are moving towards paperless credentials. I don't know if that answers your question?

Kind of senseless, why would you need 2 logs if they were exactly the same, no point. The only reason to have two logbook pages for the same day is if a CHP or LEO takes your orginal for the day at a traffic stop, inspection what ever. Then you would make a new duplicate so you could continue logging your day. If your EBOR you do not need a paperbook.

If your e-log status are not correct, your log departmet should assist you in making them correct!
If your e-log system stops working properly, your log department should be faxing you a copy of all logs up to that day (or last working day)
and then you continue on paper logs.

It's very important for drivers to understand if your e-log system does not have you on the correct duty status you need to contact log dept (or whoever in your company is in charge of editing) to edit this to reflect the true and accurate status.
Sometimes on "qualcomm units" there is a log request in the 8 day tab (or cycle 1/2 if Canadian), tap that, wait for an alert msg that states your logs have been updated (not a qualcomm msg but an alert msg) now see if it's correct.
If you forgot to chagne your status, log request will not update it l.o.l. The log request is if qualcomm was having issue's for a specific amt of time or your qualcomm got glitchy..
Ive had drivers show they didn't drive, they got excited thinking hey I got over on qualcomm but later it updated and showed and now the driver was over their 70 hour. Can we blame it on qualcomm, NOPE! It's driver responsibilty to assure all duty status are true and accurate just like on paper logs. As long as you do that and approve your logs, there is no reason at all to keep a 2nd log book. If you want, keep a note book at what time to the minute if logging by minute on e-logs or 5 minutes etc and what status you was on. If something happens then you have your note book, this is not considered a log book! Or if you keep a log book, don't sign it and don't fill in all details, the problem is your log book is by the 1/4, most e-logs are by 1 minute or 5 minutes, meaning you are losing time by using the 1/4 log information in most cases (not all though)

Call it a diary. Carriers have the ability to alter electronic logs.

Talking about the qualcomm going down for a moment-- mine has done this thing where touching the screen does nothing. There is a procedure to restart the qc with holding certain buttons in sequence for 8 seconds or so. But when that does not work I discovered you can use the keyboard to change statuses.

Use the Tab button to highlight Hours of Service then hit Enter.
Tab over to the desired status and hit Space then Enter then Tab a few times to highlight OK then Enter then highlight Yes then enter.

When I have this problem I cannot see the last 8 days worth of logs and cannot send messages. Our system used to auto shutoff after the truck was shut off after one hour. The company discovered the drivers were using that to 'hide' from the dispatcher and avoid loads etc, so they changed it to 3 hours before shutdown. The shutdown trick sometimes is the only way to fix the touchscreen problem.
