yes I do know that, and I use them in full compliance, yes I do pay attention to fuel prices. It cost them over 40 dollars a day for me to idle the 2013 freightliner they gave me for a minimum of ten hours while im on my break since they are not putting apu's on the new ones.Where is the savings in that? That's roughly over a 1000 dollars a month in fuel cost just for my 10 hour breaks.I will wait for an explanation on this

How much is the company going to spend on purchasing new APUs, then the periodic maintenance on one? Most APUs require an oil change at 2000-5000hrs, add it all up, startup costs (~6k per unit) and downtime to for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, it will take years for a fleet APU buy to pay itself off.
-
So what your saying is the 12000k a year they will spend on just my truck idling this year is more cost effective? And 12000 is a very low estimate, thats assuming I never idle while at a shipper or consignee

Lets see. First oil changes. Oil changes on an APU. Lets say every 2000 hours. 2000 divided by a 10 hour break is 200 days. 200 days divided into months is 6 months. So twice a year the oil needs to be changed. This is quick on an APU once its in the shop and can be done on a scheduled truck PM. Second startup costs. 6K per unit. Pays for itself inside of a year by fuel savings alone. Third periodic maintenance. Simple.......form a brochure or maybe a class that can be taken on the online training to educate drivers on some things they can do out on the road since hey we are the ones who have to depend on them. My APU had a fuse or relay that kept getting blown. This was an electrical issue probably since the shop installed it. I begged them to send me to thermo king but they wouldn't. I wasn't going to stop at a shop everytime this fuse went out so I begged them to show me where the fuse was so I could just buy a pack and keep them on hand. They didn't want me in there working on their APU. Your case against APUs is not convincing at all.RetiredSarge, Thomas0810, drvrtech77 and 1 other person Thank this.

I made a point in 2011 to save each and every fuel receipt. At the end of the year my total fuel cost was around 75000. No I wasn't an owner op but I was curious. 75000 during a year when fuel prices where around 4 dollars a gallon a good part of the year. That was lower than my best guess before.

Yes, I track my fuel usage and cost. I have all this info since I did start tracking it about 9 months ago because my fuel guage was junk. I also know that they do get discounts at places that are not in the fuel book. That is why the fuel solutions program sends you to many places we have not been allowed to use before.
My biggest complaint about the program is they keep wanting me to go out of route without paying me the miles to do so. If you like to drive for nothing go ahead. But I'm out here to support my family.4thgenerationtommy Thanks this. -
Here we are. A fuel Solutions Expert.
Stopping 3 or 4 times a day or having to go out of route to fuel does not save anybody money. Yes, we know what the price of fuel is. It also helps to have a working fuel guage in order to utilize a plan like that. Schneider has a plan sort of like that. But they give you a list to fill at. You must use at least one place listed for 100% compliance. Terminals give you 100% compliance. Also each time you fuel you have to log it. That comes out of your 70. Your money.J_FROG Thanks this. -
To build on what j_frog is saying, my biggest issue with the new fuel stop system is that it just plain doesn't make sense. Telling me to fuel at a stop on a route which may be 10-15 miles less then then route I plan on taking, but my route means I don't spend three hours sitting in city traffic. Also, some stops are always terrible with lines and stuff. This is all burning up the 70. Got a Qualcomm about being 0% compliant. We will see how the next few weeks go.

Be sure to document your out of routge miles, posted pump prices, unnecessary 2nd and 3rd stops and take that with you when you (if you) have a review. Its important to show them the actual cost of their program.

I use their system as much as it makes sense too. But I will not stop multiple times for fuel , when I stop I fill my tanks. Havnt heard anything from them yet but I guess we will see.
