    Note:

Starting January 30, 2012 and no later than January 30, 2014, all CDL holders must provide information to their SDLA regarding the type of commercial motor vehicle operation they drive in or expect to drive in with their CDL. Drivers operating in certain types of commerce will be required to submit a current medical examiner’s certificate to their SDLA to obtain a “certified” medical status as part of their driving record. CDL holders required to have a ”certified” medical status who fail to provide and keep up-to-date their medical examiner’s certificate with their SDLA will become ”not-certified” and they may lose their CDL.

From what i gathered yesterday talking to the NY DMV.This is a ''Federal Rule''.It is for all CDL holders.

I recieved my letter this week and i wanted to research some more. What i found was this. The only letter i will get is the letter i recieved this week.It is a letter letting you know what the new rules are. After this initial letter CDL holders will not recieve anymore letters or warnings. So this means it is 100% sole responsability on the drivers in making sure you get your MEDICAL CARD renewed in a timely manner.

If for any reason at all you ''forget'' to renew your medical card in a timely manner, you could become inactive and lose your CDL..

    You have been warned...

If the medical examiner’s certificate has expired, you must obtain a new one and provide it to your SDLA. If the variance has expired, you must renew it with FMCSA. Your State may require retesting and additional fees to get back your CDL privileges. If allowed by your SDLA, you may also change your self-certification to an operating category that does not require a medical certificate.

The feds have been taking over trucking and this is another step. Everyone wants safe drivers and one rule at a time non-conformers are being weeded out.

I like consistency as much as anyone but we're taking the spirit right out of trucking.

The tough, the can-do, the resourceful, the suvivor types who are just a bit off beat and quirky, who resist rules just because that's their nature, they're going to find themselves without a trucking job when it's all said and done.

Likewise our potential Einsteins are taking Ritalin and we'll never know what they might have been.

We're less than a year away from our medical histories going global and then to be used to label us fit or not.

If you're old no one will hire you. If you snore no one will hire you. If you're fat no one will hire you. If you smoke no one will hire you. If you took Ritalin as a child no one will hire you.

Don't ignore the path we're on. If you don't care about your own individual future then someone else will care, someone else will decide for you.

As I briefly said before, When I had my last DOT Physical, I was told that in July 2014 all DOT Physical results would be computerized and sent to the DVM. This means the examiners office has to be on line with MVD. It also means that your records are automatically updated. So providing you complete your Medical in a timely manner prior to its expiration so the original post on this thread will be obsolete.

Yes, but it may be a revelation for those who have a different mailing address on their license and receive no notification.

Why do you need a notification?

You carry your card with you, it is dated and you know it will last for two years unless you have a restricted 1 yrs.
As for the address, you are required to provide a valid contact address (Not PO Box) and if you move you should update your records. It is your responsibility to make sure your records are up to date and renewed when required.

This OP has received this letter because his DOT Medial is close to expiring, this is nothing new, If you are unfit for a DOT Medical Card no one is going to forge you one, like stated above if you have any of these symptoms then you may not qualify! End of story, the Feds or the States or even the companies don't want a 80K pound vehicle barreling down the road that is not under control at all times, These guys do this but not for long till they kill the family of 4 with 2 additional family members in the vehicle who were on their way home from their annual family reunion. I hope this explains something but I'm not sure it does. Be Safe get the Medical Care that you need!
