    Hi All-

I am a recent graduate with a class A license. I am also in the process of signing on with the national guard. Would a company hire me and allow me to leave for basic training in June 2014. I am going to do motor transport or heavy equipment operation while in the guard so I wont lose my skills? Any advice would be helpful??

I was going to apply to companies anyway and see how it goes?

    Thanks.
    JD

Under the USERRA Law, it is illegal for you to be fired or discriminated against for serving guard/reserve or active duty status. It doesn't matter if you are going through basic training, technical training, doing a drill weekend, serving active, or getting deployed into a war zone.

You should inform your employer though of your intention before you ship out so they can adjust to the situation. Your employer HAS to reserve your job while you are gone and hire you back once you completed your service.

Check out this site by the Department of Labor for more info: http://www.dol.gov/elaws/userra.htm

yes many trucking companies will let you take leave for basic training. and then they will plan you for the weeken a month required to be on base. so you might ask the recruiter about it before taking a job or going to orientation.

I wouldn't tell any of these blood sucking maggots anything a bout my future plans. You have 9 months for your boot camp JUNE,2014 ?Most new Hires in trucking struggle to stay 6 months with these trucking companies because of the BULL they expect of them.So Go a Head and get your Job and when the time comes you drop that little flash news on them 2 weeks before boot camp and if they start whining about it then dump their sorry outfit. Good Luck To Ya

I have been in the military for 10 years 4 years active Marines and now 6 in the guard. I have seen countless soldiers come in and complain about how they went to AT (annual training) and didnt have a job when they came back. What happens is you are still with the company but they don't give you hours, so essentially follow the law but also pretty much fired you or force you to look else where. The only jobs i have seen actually real military friendly if you join while you have the job is state or government jobs or real good union jobs. My advice would be to go through all your training first you got about 6-9 months of it and the pay will be ok. That way the most you are away is 2-3 day weekend drills and your once a year 2 week AT. Also they will have hired you on the assumption your already in the military and more companies may want to hire you because of your status, i believe they get kickbacks for hiring vets or guard members.

also just noticed you leave for boot camp in june, id get that pushed up to now
