Abf isn't hiring in my area and aaa cooper wasn't hiring either, or something of that nature. I remember they were the first I called when I thought about going to LTL but was told by the manager I spoke with they weren't hiring in my area even though the website said they were.
Southeastern in Ocala is the same way. They have postings on their website and on indeed.com for city P&D drivers but when I called the terminal they said they weren't hiring. Guess they're taking apps, just not hiring yet -
stay away from FedEx and Con-Way. They keep sending out freight to outside carriers. Trust me it really does hurt your wallet. UPSF does that to us as well, but at least we have the union to fight for it to end that soon hopefully.
Old D is good as they pull all their own freight, same with YRC, but they do use the rail roads quite a bit.
SouthEastern would be better for you...road_runner, DrtyDiesel and The Challenger Thank this. -
Did you try Florida Rock & Tank in Jacksonville. They haul fuel and other products.
There was a post a while back, a driver got a local job in Jacksonville driving a tanker for CTL. Day cab, home every night.road_runner Thanks this. -
Is there anything you don't know about? I am thinking about going FedEx Ground. What is your professional opinion on that?
Edit: One of FedEx's contractors (Custom Transport Inc) -
Also, if you consider doing local tanker, Energy Dispatch pays good for hauling fuel to all the Racetrac gas stations in Jax. You will rarely have a weekend off though.
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
Florida rock and tank require you to be 25 years old, I'll be 23 in a few days.

ground contractors, its hit or miss on what they pay. Not sure if getting health ins is a big deal to you since most contractors do not pay it..But you might get all the miles your heart desires.. I think it was cool35 that was working for a fxg contractor last winter.

ACH, They have been trying to fight that since I almost went to work there. That was in 2006 or 07 I believe.

Southeastern uses outside carriers as well. CRST, JM Bozeman, Landspan, G&P (sister company to SEFL), and TLI come to mind. Some guys seem to have a problem with it, but the way I look at it is this: If that's what Southeastern needs to do to save money and keep MY job secure, I'm fine with it. I'm assuming it's because they can add or remove contracted carriers at the drop of a hat to keep up with fluctuations in freight volume without worrying about constantly adding/removing/reassigning work for what would otherwise be a full-time associate. Afterall, SEFL has never had a layoff or paycut in company history. I don't know much about FedEx. I've spoken to a few of their drivers - a couple guys asked me if we were hiring. I guess all in all, they seemed to be happy. Those new KWs sure are nice...
DrtyDiesel and The Challenger Thank this.
