OK I have to refute this post, I ran reefers for years, And drove 95% of the time during the daytimes, Very seldom did I have to run nights, I'm not saying you will never run nights, it goes with the territory in this business
looking to switch to reefer

Right now running dry van but have an opportunity for some reefer loads, which means buying reefer or leasing on an o/o who already has one. Not being so familiar with them, how much more should we ask in rate than we would running the same lane with a dry van? Just want to make sure the rate is worth the additional expense of the reefer....though something to be said for a consistent, semi-dedicated run. Thanks for your input....and, fyi, the driver has a lot of reefer experience, just not so much with the rates involved.

3 dollar a mile sounds like a good starting point to me
Charli Girl Thanks this. -
I was not offered close to that...is that a realistic figure? Not from what I've seen, but I know I have not seen the best rates....

Outboumd from kc to tx is 3 ks to midwest is 2.50

2-2.5 at best. Only one trip I had $3 this year in June (WA-NY). Right now stuck in WA. Brokers torturing drivers with $1.6.
From time to time there are $3-$4 rates from CA to TX. But you have to have your "own" broker.DoneYourWay and osumike33 Thank this. -
Thats our contract rate outbound all year guess it,s a good deal

The rates are all dependent upon where the load originates and where it is going. That is the same across the board for ALL freight. However, with that said, that also changes with the season and the region.. etc. Rates out of Cali, for instance, can change by the hour. One day you can grab a load going to the NE for $8,000-$10,000 depending... the very next week that exact load will top out at $6,000.
Reefer freight is a finicky world.. on average though, and I stress average here, you shouldn't have to move for less than $2.00 p/m. BUT that depends on many variables. Most guys I work with are getting much more than that, but you have to look at where they are running and lanes they run.Last edited: Nov 3, 2013
