This isn't always true but often believed. There are jobs out there paying decent cash that are local or regional and/or home daily/weekly. I make more than many otr drivers driving local tanker and I'm home every night and this is my first driving job since the '80s. Living in Ohio you should be able to make even more than me with a local driving gig since Florida is infamous for paying less than most other states. I have a buddy in Cincinnati looking to start a second/retirement career as a driver and he has some decent prospects when he completes school.

Out of the companies the op mentioned, personally I'd go with Boyd. Heard good things about them and talked to several drivers who are happy there. PGT is also good and Phil is a great guy but he's no longer there according to a driver on this site.

Whatever you choose, try to specialize with tanker or flatbed. If you can obtain your Hazmat and TWIC and passport it will open up that many more doors. Good luck.

 

Swift has excellent CDL training. You can decide which company you want for a career later; right now you just need a good CDL school and Swift offers that.

No TMC does not slip seat

 

After getting your CDL at say a local community college, how long is the phase of training with a trainer and; once on your own,is it better to go with CPM or %. Seriously considering Trucking after retirement in Jan. 2014. Any comments I would appreciate!

 

the time spent with a trainer varies depending on the company. Some are as few as a couple days and some are as long as 6mths.

 

I was with a trainer for 8 weeks and recommend at least 6 weeks. Go with a company that has good equipment and a trainer that lives close to your home.

Make sure you start as a van driver, you can do that anytime later on. Wish I would have trained with a flatbed carrier at first.
