Hey everyone, I've been quietly reading on here the last few months and getting really excited to be on the road! I start orientation on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Tunnel Hill, GA. Every thing I've been reading has been really helpful, So I'm really looking forward to it. I have a couple questions. How long do the days usually last during orientation? I read you have to be in the hotel lobby by 6:30 am, I live in Chattanooga, so I will just be driving there and I'm assuming it starts at 7. I gotta call monday to confirm everything. I just got my CDL a couple days ago, So I'm new to everything. I have everything completed, just waiting to get my hazmat stuff in the mail so I can go and take my test for my endorsement. Also, about how long do people usually wait after orientation to be partnered with a trainer? I've heard some is the next day and others have had to wait a week or longer! And is it easy to get or request a 10 speed when I upgrade? I've been reading that some people have gotten automatics and that they're bringing in more. I wouldn't mind but I just spent weeks learning a stick shift and I enjoy driving them lol. Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

Orientation the first day started for us at the Markham terminal at 7am then 8am the second and 3rd day. First two days last till 4-5pm. 3rd day is a half day.

You could meet up with a trainer that day or a week. It depends on if they have one nearby. Tunnil Hill is the main terminal...shouldn't be a problem. You MAY have to take a bus to meet him.

Solo drivers typically get an older truck. It may be a 10 speed. You could always ask for one. My suggestion, find out who the terminal manager is. He is the one who assigns trucks.

Ken Haynes is the equipment manager at Tunnel Hill. You'll meet with him to get your truck assignment.

As far as what you get, it's what ever they have available at the time of your upgrade. Most are 10 speeds, but there are still some auto-shifts left in the system.

    Good Luck.

I'm definitely going to try and meet everyone I can, I feel like it wil make things go much smoother as far as getting information. I've heard the hotel at Tunnel Hill isn't the best so I'm kinda happy I'll be driving down there lol. I hope I dont have to take a bus anywhere to meet my trainer, but I just want to get out on the road as soon as I can. I plan on going solo but havent decided yet, I want to bring my dog with me sometimes and dont mind paying the pet fee, but if I find someone that I could get along with, then I'll probably do that to get more miles and more money!

The hotel Tunnel Hill uses is okay. The worst part about is the bathrooms. Needs an upgrade. I always tell them the hot water temperature is scary high in the shower. The owner thinks it's fine. That thing is going to burn your skin if your not careful.

They do allow one dog if you decide to team. What kind of dog do you have ?

I think the old automatic trucks they have still are the Petes. Teams get new trucks. Which means less likely to breakdown. Something to think about.

Yeah I'm glad I don't have to stay there or share a room lol, it's only 20 minutes from my house so it's not bad.

I have a very large dog ha he's half St. Bernard/ great pyranese, his name is wrigley.. I don't plan on bringing him much, but were too good of friends to not bring him every now and then.

i wouldn't mind an auto but I would really like to get a stick because I'm fresh out of school and never drove a stick prior to school, so I still have a lot of practicing and tuning to do with switching gears.

i see you're from Chicago, I was born there in oak park and still have a lot of family there, I hope to move there one day, no other city like it anywhere!

Oh wow that's a big dog. Take him with you. You'll be gone for weeks at a time. It's nice to have man's best friend over the road. Their great reminders to get out of truck for a while

We're from Chicago. Lived in the West Loop before we started trucking. Now we live in Schaumburg. Oak Park is a great city. It's got a lot of trendy restaurants we would eat at. Chicago is thee most amazing city. It's got everything you could want.

You'll get a 10 speed I'm 80% sure. Ask for a Cascadia. That should secure you get a 10 speed.

First thing on day one of orientation is the physical abd drug test. Be the first one to do it so you can lounge around the rest of the day. Tunnel Hill has a large orientation class. Those two things take up most of the day.

Victor King was my trainer. Awesome guy. His home terminal is Tunnel Hill. If you can get him then your time spent training will be like a traveling party when your not driving. I learned a lot from him.

I just left US Xpress as a solo driver. I had an 8 speed. So you can get anything from auto, 8, or 10. Just depends what's there when you upgrade from your trainer. Good luck.
