I have been driving for over eight years, but stopped about two years ago because of kidney failure. I recently had a kidney transplant and I'm ready now to go back to work.

Are there any regulations against driving with a kidney transplant?

    tscottme and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Good question. I had a friend that donated a kidney, and he went right back to work.

CFR 156.13 clearly states : "The kidney transplant must be a licensed CDL kidney, and have no prior convictions or failures hereunto, thereafter, or forthwith. A full record of the previous kidney owner's driving record must also be forwarded to the prospective employer"

I'm sure it's a box that gets checked on the medical exam, but if you can pass a medical exam, and a worksteps physical that the company will probably require, then I don't see a problem. Are you taking any medications that would disqualify you?

Think it would only be an issue if any medication you were to take would be an issue.Otherwise I would imagine as long as you past your physical its all good.

Mr(?) Ram from NJ, hats off to you. Kidney failure is so horrible that even people who hate your guts would be cheering your post. Anyways, congrats. I shall drink my next adult beverage in your honor.

I know this is over a decade old but when I asked bing "can you become a truck driver after a kidney transplant" This was a large part of its answer I just had to tell you.

Well, my transplant just turned 1 year old. Unfortunately, from what little I know about the (deceased) donor , I doubt she had a CDL.....
however, if it wasn't for my current age, lack of commercial driving in the last decade, and the fact that I make easily twice what I would driving today, yeah, I COULD go back to driving. Nothing I take disqualifies me, although the prednisone makes me sweat like a pig.....Getting monthly blood draws done and seeing my transplant nephrologist every 3 months would be a hassle, so I'd have to stick with local work. Also, anti-rejection drugs like Cellcept and Tacrolimus aren't available just anywhere, and are expensive enough that getting a 90 day supply would be difficult. So, no OTR; you would need a schedule that gets you home at least twice a week.
