Just wondering how do you keep a reefer running when at a ts? Apu or shoreline? If apu, wouldn't it be drained from running the reefer? Also what does cycling do and how often does it cycle? Is it the same both on road and parked at a ts?

reefer has its own diesel engine
you don't need to worry about
separate fuel tank also
the set up is either to run cycle or continuous
cycle the reefer shuts off until temp changes
continuous always runs
shipper and BOL will have setting instructions -
Why don you need to worry about second fuel tank. Dont you have to make sure it remains full?
-
Reefer will have its own fuel tank. Yes, you should make sure that it is fueled at all times.
An APU, is usually referred as a separate device, for the heating and cooling of your truck. Will not have anything to do with the reefer. -
Trailers have to operate independently of a truck (tractor) because they will sit for days sometimes loaded with product on a shipper's drop lot before the carrier will arrive at the shipper to hook up and haul the load. Shore power operated reefer units are unheard of in the USA
-
Actually...... Carrier does have a trailer capable of both. My company bought a couple of them. Not sure why, since they've never set up any place for them to hook up to. Believe that they are 360v, not sure of the phase.

Shore power reefers are fairly common with food service and dedicated grocery fleets, so they don't have to run the reefer while they're in the outbound docks being loaded or waiting for departure.
