Below average? For who? Even an engineer starts at roughly the same pay and benefits...but a. Engineer sure won't make $50k after one year. A hell of a lot of 22 year olds wish they made $35k. Truckong is actually a great second career for people who can't get into their field of study. Where else could you EVER make 50 grand for a $5000 certification? I have a universal refrigerant certification...and that starts at $10 after two years of school.

Either way, Werner is a fair paycheck...go visit indeed and check out Werner compared to CR England or average companies. The average was in the low 20s last time I checked, but Werner was in the mid 30s. I made 35 my first year, and 35 by August of the second year. It's far from a bad check. No high school graduate is going to make 35k that easy.

This is your definition of GOOD JOB, and that's perfectly fine. There's no need to go above and beyond to tell me how wonderful Werner PayCheck is.
Just on the note there are some trucking Jobs where you can make 50K in about 4 months or less.
All in all, good luck to you.

Another option with Werner you should explore as an interim step towards your final job is what dedicated accounts are available. One of Werner's strong points from a rookies perspective is their willingness to assign drivers with minimal experience to dedicated. They have a couple hundred accounts ranging from accounts with just 1 or 2 trucks to large accounts like Ðollar General. Miles are steady, pay is better than OTR, and often times dispatch is on-site. Accounts vary from driver unload at the dollar accounts to all drop and hook at Target. Areas covered range from local delivery to coast to coast runs.

$1,000 a week take home would be music to my purse man. I've never made that much in my life. Honestly, I don't need to make $150,000 a year or anything. If I can make $50-$100K, I will be more than content. That's not me being mediocre or accepting mediocre, it just means I can live the life I want and do so comfortably.

thanks, but I am a woman lol. not "man". the name in my sig should be the first indicator of that lol. Net-Ops can burn in hell. buncha weenie drivers. want miles, but they aren't willing to do real work for it, so they suck miles and loads off everyone else. buncha bs.

I refuse to go dedicated. I get bored really easy and if I have to see the same miserable crap and the same miserable people every day, I will become very miserable and bored myself. thanks but no thanks. I love the anonymity of the road and waking up every day going somewhere new, seeing new people.

and I just don't see how people do that god awful dollar tree/family dollar/dollar general account ####. You couldn't hand me a bag full of million bucks to take that account.

nope...no thanks. next step for me is to become a trainer. I like OTR! new places, new things to see, new people, new restaurants and new food to try. dedicated just means same crap, same people, same place and that equals no bueno for this girl!

The part about team training is painfully true. I'm just a few days into training and we are running as a team. Luckily my first few days took me through some major weather conditions and large up and down grades, so I got active training in the areas where I was most concerned.

Now I just want to power through this and get my own truck. I don't like the idea of getting $400 a week to drive 10-11 hrs a day while my trainer is asleep.

Edit: its not meant to be a knock at my trainer, he's got every reason to run us as a team and so does Werner. Its just how their training system is set up.

Yup, but it's a hell lot better than the alternatives at CR England... One of the reasons put accident rare is so much lower, and our CSA score is so much better. They don't even have a curfew. I've had guys from CR England who told me they drive nights the entire time from day one. Insane. I don't let my student drive past 3 or 4, even when they are off curfew. That's just wrong.

To each their own.. for me personally... when I was training... I did better and liked it when the trainer was in the back.. yes, obviously I was training so there were times they had to be in passenger seat... but, when just rolling along the higway.. I liked it when they were in the bunk...

As for being able to play the radio.. I see both sides of it.. my first trainer was immature and inconsiderate... fortunately she is no longer a trainer... anyway, she would play the radio load when I was trying to sleep.. it kept me up and really annoyed me...
I do like to have a radio on when I am driving.. with my second trainer,.. we had a defferent approach and look at things.. basically, what his philosophy is.. you want your co driver to be well rested when they are driving and your life is in their hands while you sleep.. so, yes, play the radio, but not loudly...

The bigest part or reason for training is to get some time and experience in the seat and behind the wheel.. so, no need to have a trainer next to you every minute you drive.. unless, you really are that bad a driver

Are you talking about a Train engineer? Depending upon location and specialty an engineer with a 4 year degree normally will usually start out at around $65K per year, Google and Facebook engineers start at $100K per year but most people are not smart enough to get one of those jobs. Most Average engineers will make at least $100K/year with experience. Being a truck driver is a way harder job than being an engineer, and quite frankly most drivers deserve way more money. How do I know? I spent most of my career as an engineer supporting analog TV chips sets, before digital TV made a good portion of my knowledge obsolete. I thought being a OTR truck driver would be a fun way to finish up my working career before retiring. After a small sampling of what a truck drivers life was all about I quit (hence my screen name). I spent another two years retraining myself, and now have another engineering job. Engineers are treated like gold compared to Truck Drivers. I took many trips to Europe and Asia, some of the time they even paid me to fly in business class. Hotels were always top notch and paid by the company and meals on the road are always paid for, plus quite frankly most engineering jobs are more interesting than driving a truck. If someone has the ability to be an engineer they should definitely go for it. Don't get me wrong, I have the highest respect for truck drivers and their skills, I even come back to this forum from time to time to relive my "glory days". I sometimes feel bad that I did not make it as a driver. These are two very different occupations, after seeing both I would say that truck drivers are getting a bad deal. Hope I don't come off as being a snob or something.

It really blows my mind that CRE can be so notorious for being a horrible company, yet I see more of their trucks than any other fleet.

When I was testing for my CDL 4 England drivers failed in the time it took 1 from my school to complete the course (and pass). The England trainer informed us that their students get 3 days of road drive time before they test.

I guess company sponsored training is appealing to those who can't finance their way through an independent school.

Oh well, stuck on i80 in Wyoming and have nothing better to do than read forums :/

Oh ya, especially out in Wyoming it will look that way. The DOT website says they have like 5000 trucks... about half the size of Werner or a quarter the size of Swift... but with way way worse CSA scores.

We get CR England guys all the time, they say the same thing... the training is like a week long, and then they dont even have a curfew. We generally dont take people unless they have at least 100 hours of training... then we require them to do another 275. Even experienced drivers with under a few months are required to do 175 hours of training. So Werner is completely different.

I think you are right about the company sponsored training. Most people dont know that small mom and pop places will do the same for you. I was surprised to see that my school did the same... they only had a few trucks and they still helped finance people. When people got hired, the companies would pay back the little mom and pop schools at like $100 a month or so, but the student was responsible for the difference. I would recommend going to a $4000 mom and pop over CR England any day. I got a month of training and housing, and saved thousands... just by going to a small mom and pop school. Best decision I ever made...

I couldnt believe how much better the mom and pop places train their students. As a trainer myself, I love to have students from local schools. They come basically totally trained, and they can just get the driving out of the way and not have to struggle like the other students. I hate getting guys from roadmasters... I dont know how they even pass the CDL test.

Personally, I would love to see every driver go to a mom and pop... it just makes things so much easier on everyone.
