I have a dirtbag company for you all, Hoker trucking in Dixon, Iowa. loose leaf logs, no pre-pass, no quacomm, are you sensing a getting theme here, he claims he will not get these things on the trucks until he is forced to. Well it's because lots of illegal miles and very long hours, and lots of in your face arguments. And when I quit with out notice, he was in my face and stole $1000.00 out of my check through $250.00 truck cleaning-$600.00 or so for out of route miles and a late delivery fee?? What load? This guy is a two faced liar so don't go there.

I don't see why you're getting all bent out of shape over loose leaf logs...makes it easier to hand the officer only that which is required (current day + 7 previous days) instead of up to a month's worth of logs for them to dig through trying to find a mistake. When I go on a road trip, I use store-bought loose leaf logs, despite the fact that the carrier supplies log books for that very reason. If I have to have a log book, it won't include anything I'm not required to have.

Pre-pass costs money. Every time you get a green light, whether the coups are open or not, he'd get charged the fee. Not only that, but it is another electronic time stamp to worry about during an audit that he may not have had access to but the auditor would, which means he could be fined for something he couldn't control.

Qualcomms cost money. Initial purchase, maintenance, training, not to mention the service fees just to have the thing work. That is a completely unnecessary expense for a small carrier.

Quitting without notice usually bites you. NEVER burn bridges, no matter HOW bad you think you have it. As far as the "long hours and illegal miles", you are subject to the same HOS whether you are on paper logs or electronic logs. YOU are the one signing them to certify they are accurate. YOU are responsible for logging your day legally. If you are legitimately out of hours and they fire you for not continuing to run, the FMCSA will have your back, coming down hard on them and making them reinstate you to your job AND pay you the wages you would have earned had you not been fired. It doesn't matter how hard they want you to run, ultimately YOU are the one with the keys to the truck and the ink pen in your hand keeping tabs on the hours you've worked.

I myself like loose leaf, I run all my hours through my DDL software before I put it on paper. He uses another program, that conflicts with my program, as far as pre-pass that's another cost that could have saved me a ticket four weeks ago. It leaves you open for an inspection or cred's check/ log book check. And the cost should be a part of the settlement. Qcomms are good for load info anyway, although I'm loving the e-logs more and more. Most of my time at this company illegal, and I write down everything, places-time-date-location. That's just my experience with this company.

No, running LEGAL would have saved you a ticket 4 weeks ago. If you KNEW you weren't legal, choosing to go a different route (with no scales) could have also saved you from getting a ticket 4 weeks ago. When you do cross a scale and they choose to inspect, and they find anything wrong, your company is less likely to get the green light the next time...so maybe the boss knows his scores aren't good enough to get regular green lights? If the only time he'd get the green light is if the coups are closed, you are STILL crossing the scale, and he is paying for a service that ain't doing him a lick of good.

Whatever his reasons are, it is his company, and his trucks, and if he doesn't want to pay for it he isn't going to. If you want to work for an e-log/pre-pass company, there are plenty of them out there..m.or you could save up some money, buy a truck, and put whatever electronic gizmos in there you want...until you run out of money and can't afford to pay for the completely unnecessary services.

Sure, Qualcomm works great to dispatch a large fleet of trucks...don't have to sit on hold for 45 minutes to talk to a dispatcher. But for a smaller fleet? Complete waste of money.

There still are many companies that uses paper logs and no Qualcomm mainly because of the cost.BUt all of what the op mentioned also factors in if this company is an illegal outfit to begin with.Considering the tough time companies have keeping drivers its beyond me why they continue to operate the way they do they're not making any headway.

I pay for my own Prepass, in a company truck. Since I'm a member of OOIDA, it costs me $ 14.90 a month. That's it, if I stay home a month, I pay 14.90, if I cross 25,000 scales in a month it still costs 14.90 a month.

Deleted. Theres a company near me thats the same way loose leaf logs,no qualcomm, no governor on truck pays$20 per hour 1 1/2 after 40 running regional reefer ltl can work as much as you want and guy cant find drivers.Just goes to show people dont want to work anymore rather just make their 800-1000 per week on elogs and slow trucks and then complain that their not getting any miles.

What exactly are "illegal miles"? I work for a company that runs the same way, no quallcomm, no prepass, loose leaf logs but no one forces me to run illegal.

Go find a lobotomized quallcomm outfit with 500 trucks or more, go make that 1800 miles per week. Im sure Heartland Express would love to have you.
