First year dry van driver here, committed to satisfying a one year contract that is up end of year. My question is when do I start applying? Clean MVR, Hazmat, Tanker, doubles/triples endorsed, no TWIC.
My passion is in tankers, though not a requirement, and remaining OTR is desirable. I'm fine with staying out a couple months at a time.
Is Schneider the obvious next step? Or Indian River? The only reservations I have with the big guys is forced dispatch to Canada, Chicago(low bridge phobia) and NYC.
So, when is a good time to start applying?
Is 8-months OTR too soon to start applying?

You still have 4 mos. left on your contract.
Start the applications about the last few days of November or first week of December to set up an orientation date right after Christmas/NewYears.dca and Skydivedavec Thank this. -

Compared to what's out there, you're OVER qualified.
Skydivedavec and Chinatown Thank this. -
Wouldn't hurt to complete the contract first and then apply especially being the holidays. You'd be amazed at just how ruthless and vindictive some companies are.
Skydivedavec and loose_leafs Thank this. -

Get your year in first no matter what. A solid year looks a lot better than 8 months, even if your current company smears you for some reason. Most companies that are interested in you can and will start contacting your current employer right away if you give them signed permission.
As far as low bridge phobia, in a tanker outfit you shouldnt have half the problem us box guys do, and most tanker outfits run midroofs or flat tops.Skydivedavec Thanks this.
