Last week i got a call about orientation. She said i was all set except now if i wanted to work for Roehl i now had to sign a promissary note. Stating that if i quit before driving 50k miles i had to pay Roehl 3,130 dollars. Im not signing that. Never know what will happen in next 6 months. The training is not that valuable. I already have a note from cdl school. From what i.undrstand i owe it even if they send me home. Im out

I guess I'm confused. I'm going to Roehl and fully expect to work for them for 1+ years or until I hit the magic mile number. Might work longer if I enjoy it. I need my CDL. Seems to me it is a good way to get the license with a decent company.

I have been with Roehl since August and I have not heard of this contract. I would double check it because I am happy with Roehl and the way they have treated me.

I am finishing cdl school in my hometown. Was told new policy. Would be different if i went to a roehl cdl school.

Just to clarify, you are talking about their "no experience school" right? where they assist with your CDL? I don't see why they are not doing it already, it does cost them, even though they most likely get backing by the govt for each student, but if they are training you, I don't see what the issue is. I have already made plans to go through a local driving school, but if I was in a pickle and needed to get it with no money to pay for school, I don't see dedicating 6 months to that company as an issue. There are some companies out there that will want you to do 12-13 months if they get you your CDL. I have made a crap ton of calls lately to a lot of companies.

Ok. To avoid confusion i went am currently in a private cdl school with a loan. Not a roehl cdl course. They want to charge me for the 21 day trainer otr phase training if i leave before 50k miles. Who would sign another note? After school note. Just giving others a heads up.

I totally understand. That knocks that one off my bucket list now. They were one of the ones I was looking at for when I attend in January, but not anymore. Will have to verify tomorrow, but wow! really, for normal over the road training.... think I will keep looking in to Melton or TMC if it is true.

Roehl is probably just looking to recoup some of the money they loose when drivers go there, get trained, then bug out to another company when something doesn't suit their fancies. The 21-day orientation program involves lots of time and effort and resources invested in a prospective employee.
This is probably also intended to cramp the style of the serial job hoppers who make money going from orientation to orientation with different companies. They're out there.

If any company requires me to sign a contract, it's going to include a clause that stipulates a definite term of employment of one year, along with minimum pay of $300 daily for each day or portion of a day that I am available for dispatch and away from home. And add per diem pay of $50 for each night spent in the sleeper. I say that's fair compensation for my time and effort. Should put pressure on the company to keep me moving efficiently and make sure that I get home when I need to.
