I did the bus thing for a bit last year, I was paid from the time I punched in to the time I punched out. I was paid pre-trip, post trip and clean up time. The problem was I was "part time" and only got 20 to 30 hours in a week. The kids were brats for the most part, there were some that were good kids but overall, I hate kids now.

ALSO I can't believe the idiots they got driving school buses. I mean now that school is open, the buses are running and they drive like crap. This morning I was going up a local 4 lane road back to my customer and a bus driver just pulled out right in front of me without hesitation. I had to slam on the brakes, skidding the truck and scaring the crap out of me. After getting next to him, I can't see what his issue was but the bus was stuffed, kids standing in the isle and all over the place. This is just one of many, like drivers not using red flashers on roads, ignoring train crossings and running red lights.

In the 60's, 70's & 80's, I know that, here in north La, bus drivers bought their own bus, insurance, fuel etc. The way they did that is you would essentially apply for a route. Once you were assigned a route, it was pretty much yours forever as long as you wanted it. There just wasn't a lot of turn over in bus routes.

Once you were given a route, you had to buy your bus for the next years route (if another driver died or give up his route for some reason, you could buy his bus & take over his route by contract for this year). Once you get a route & a bus, they were paid "X" amount per month, 12 months a year.

They were assigned routes & paid by the Parish (County) School Board System.

My step father and mom owned a school bus company here in Pa till his death a few years back. They had 20+ buses, many handicap vans and a few sedans. They made a very comfortable living running the company, plus he drove occasionally too. Alot of time and hard work went in to running the entire operation. And yes, most of the drivers were paid hourly with, I believe, some mileage pay under certain circumstances.

My uncle is a bus driver. Its part time around $15 per hour. He supplements his income as a tour bus driver.

I'm with a fairly large bus company..I do some routes and a lot of trips. We're paid from the time we show up at the terminal to the time we go home...pay starts at $11.75 for charter trips and $14.75 per hour on routes (you're guaranteed at least 2 hours every time you go out on a route).

I do some routes as a sub driver but most of my work comes in the form of school sports/charter trips. The company I work for does a lot of non-school trips like baseball games, pub crawls and canoe company shuttles. There's also several other nearby company terminals that are constantly asking for extra buses so I get plenty of work.

From what I've seen, it's strictly a secondary source of income. Most of the drivers are retired and do it for a little extra money every month or simply to get out of the house. I like it because it's WAY better than flipping burgers or doing landscape work (what I did before). The kids are pretty nice, I've only had maybe 1 or 2 problem kids. All in all, it's a decent part time job but nothing more than that. Defentiely not a career.

Ugh, pub crawls. We used to do those, along with bachelor parties. Now when they come calling we give them a quote that's way too high. If they take it, great! More money! If not, no big loss.

Children spread disease. Bus driving should require a HAZMAT
