Hello! Hubby has about 1 year, 3 months experience in trucking. He's been working as a company driver for 3 different companies... and hasn't been getting paid well by the last.
He figures he MUST either own or lease a truck (either new or used) to get ahead.
What are the unforseen pros and cons he should be watching out for? I am HUGELY hesitant at the idea or him leasing or owning at present. I think if things go wrong, we could be wiped out financially.
I'd prefer he plug along as a company driver, and hope to get into a better company than the one who's been paying him so poorly. Am I right in this notion? I am someone who believes in being CONTENT with just being able to pay the bills, but I think he wants to reach "higher". But I think he may be overreaching, especially at this point.

He can be successful with Cardinal Logistics and it's not a lease deal; it's a purchase deal.
They make their money hauling freight, not leasing or selling trucks. -
Being content is good, as a company driver I can gross around 60,000, not as much as a lot of people here.

Just taking a guess but he's pulling dry van? Work for a flatbed or tanker and see if that covers the bills

Potential repairs. Engine repairs at the worst possible moment. Tires needing replacing at $4000+ for drive tires alone. Average Repairs shop rates is $ 100 to $126 an hour. That means you MUST have a bank account cushion to hold you over until you can get back on the road.
Down time can be from injury, repairs, accident,weather or just getting sick, family emergency.
i see a problem with your hubby. Aside from too little experience in trucking.
Second,, he is a job hopper and no really good company is going to touch him. If he can last at least a minimum of 13 months with one company he is a better candidate for hiring. 13 months being the magic number. Being a job hopper is a big strike against him .
Even if he bought a truck that job hopping work record is still going to go against him to lease on to a quality company. That is another story in it's self.. It will be against him when buying it.
In that 1 year and a few months did he learn anything about the trucking industry.?
There is sooo much to know and learn about the industry, like seasons, areas to run or to not run , kind of equipment to pull insurance and how it works ect.
Remember that as an O/O or lease operator ( I do not recommend doing that) you will not have any company benefits that you have now. NONE , No life insurance, No Workmans comp, No vacation or pay.No steady checks nor any steady amounts. Monthly truck payments you will make even if truck is in shop of say at least $1200 a month plus insurance too.
You will absorb all of those expenses plus many more. Can you do that ? Are you ready to go into debt for at least $50,000 or more to have the title of Owner Operator? No other truck to drive like in a company truck. You will be absorbing out of your pocket 100 % of the truck expenses. 100% .
Do not go Lease Operator/ Lease Purchase. You and your hubby are not ready nor equipped to do it. Too many pit falls . The company recruiter is a good salesman and will make it sound good. 99% of the time it is not.
My advice is for him to hang in and get that 13 months. Do not worry about the company corp offices being 1200 miles away. Most will allow taking truck home. Most newbies seem to think that if the company has a terminal within an hours drive of home is the way to go. Forget that unless you have personal information that erases that problem.
