Kind of how it is done here in CT too.
I just did the "on line" part a few days ago for a walk in as the web said full up for the next 28+ days.
If I don't "walk in" this week I will next week as I need to get this done before I go for my HAZMAT endorsement.

Yeah, another thing too is the Hazmat pre screen is not instantanious either. It took my Hazmat clearance about 7 days to come back. My TWIC was approved within 2 hours and had it in my mailbox about a week later.

Yea what I hear it takes about month for everything to be in hand.
So if you need it tomorrow you have better started all this a month ago.
That is why I started mine so when I get my Lic. I can add it with out the extra charge of a new Lic.

I went ahead and put in for my TWIC today. I wasn't expecting it, but I saved $20 by already having done the Hazmat. By knocking out the paperwork online last night, it made for a quick appointment. I don't think I was in there for 15 minutes.

Hey guys, I am little confused about some of this stuff, so sorry if I seem a little dim.

Should I schedule my TWIC appointment before I start CDL school? I plan to get Hazmat and Tanker endorsements in school, but I don't understand much about the process of getting HM or the even how the licensing works.

My goal is to get a CDL A with Tanker, Hazmat and have a TWIC/Passport before I apply to any company.

    Thanks

I would. My hazmat took 65 days for the TSA to do my background check and even then I think the only reason they moved in it is that I was calling every other day bugging them. So if there is a way to expidite it I would take full advantage of it.

Yup. If I knew a month ago what I know now...I'd have knocked out everything that I could have prior to starting class. i.e. The endorsement tests. You can take all of the tests at one time so that you're not having to run down to the DMV "on the reg."

    Smoke Brake Thanks this.

So basically, if I go to CDL school and take the hazmat and tanker tests while in school, I won't necessarily get the endorsements when my CDL is issued? Because I won't have passed the DHS reqs for getting the endorsements? Am I getting this? Cause the guys I'm talking to at schools, don't really explain much or act like much is involved. But I've got a feeling there is a bit more to it than 'go to their school and figure out the rest later'.

It depends on your state. Some states, like Georgia, won't even let you test until you get your clearance back saying your able to qualify for the endorsement. As for getting it before you go to school, as long as your have your CDL permit you can. When I called the universal enrollment they told me you have to have a CDL (either permit or license) in order to start the process. You can not start the process for your HazMat with out either, but TWIC you can.

Thanks man, its making a bit more sense now.

I was hoping to start school on Dec 1, now I'm wondering if I should wait. Or get my permit on my own and start the process like you suggested.

Seems like the downside of starting school so soon is, my new CDL won't show all the endorsements and I'll have to get a new one with the correct info about 1-2 months after I finish school. Seems like a silly duplication of energy that just costs me more $.

Oh wait I understand now, its the US government involved.

I wish these guys at the schools would spell it out like that instead of just trying to get you to sign up for school ASAP.
