A power jack is like a hand jack just has a battery to raise and lower the jack. And some have motorized wheels. When I pull reffer the company pays for the lumper but If I unloaded the trailer and made out a receipt they would pay me. That is a great idea. Not sure if it's legal

It all depends on the company you sign on with. I'm digging reefers. I don't unload or play the pocket cash games. The company I'm leased to pays all lumper and other fees, so THEY unload while I get some sack time in the sleeper. I'm not a Sack Rat, but yes - 02:30 (and other wee hour) appointment times are not uncommon. I drove the time to get there then. I'd rather sleep than lump and get into all that grocery mob/ mafia/ (in my mind that's what it is) extortion stuff. I made my appointment time on time (at the WINDOW), how much to get unloaded? OK. You take EFS? Yeah, good. Wake me up when you're done. I'll have the check ready. Nice doing business with you. You too. I'm gonna catch a nap. I'll wake you up when we got you finished. Thanks.

Little more work maintaining and monitoring temp than dry freight, but not nearly as much work in the elements as flatbedding was. I stay rolling year round with no slow down. Between the drop and hooks, sweet and fast warehouses and the slow and go's, my dock time is about the same as anything else I've done.

Same Schnizzle - just different wagon.

When unloading yourself instead of using a lumper though, do you not have to usually take apart the pallets and rewrap them afterwards?

Let me just say, you haven't lived until you've been to places like Certified in Chicago, SuperValu in Green Bay, or Roundy's in Oconomowoc with a reefer. Certified, you were NOT allowed on the dock, Roundy's you had to use a lumper, or be there all day, ( which I was getting paid by the hour, so I sat there all day) and SuperValu, well, they were just plain nasty, especially if the Packers lost. Some places were ok, Jewel in Chicago, Shannon in Appleton, and Schultz in Sheboygan, were all pretty cool, however, I don't miss a reefer one bit. In all my years, I never once paid a lumper to unload my trailer.

Hi A Bug, oh yeah. Take a layer off, put a layer on, 4 high 3 to a layer , not 3 high 4 to a layer, oh, and my personal favorite, "we use small wood here". But that's just normal delivery baloney, common to reefer or van. Flatbed, while challenging, has it's own advantages, no docks or pallets, and people are usually waiting for your goods and get right to unloading you, at least, the flatbed stuff I did.

True that Semi! Appointment times were just because the software that dispatch used had to have something in that box. 99% of appointment times were "99:99 - 99:99". Appointment times just meant the day. Time didn't matter. Lot of times, day didn't either. Long as you didn't cost them money having the crane there an extra day or after knock off - they didn't care. Crane op may grumble, but they grumble about everything and get paid more than we did so - who cares? Shut it and shuck it! Sooner you get it off my back, the sooner we'll both be knocking back a brew! Well move then; I cqn't swing it w/ you standin' on it!
