As a company driver do you carry any personal liability insurance? I realize you are probably covered by the company, but in this litigious society, it seems reasonable that, in the event of an accident - SUE EVERYONE is the rule of the day.
Regards and thanks for input

Yes, over and above the coverage on house and rentals. Called an umbrella policy. $2 mill. Covers all claims exceeding current policies. $220/year.
hal380 Thanks this. -
Personal umbrella policies exclude coverage when it comes to for profit / for hire vehicles, and more than likely your policy specifically excludes tractor trailer combinations.
Umbrella premium is typically 20% of liability premium of your operation if you get a commercial umbrella policy for a trucking company.
As to OP: If you are a company driver, then the company insurance covers you.hal380 Thanks this. -
I am O/O, and have a General Liability ( not umbrella ) policy for a million bucks. Cost is around 400 a year. Covers such things as someone slipping in my trailer, my use of someone else's forklift, opening trailer door by lumper and product falls on them, etc.
Some 25 years ago I had a pistol fall out of a cab-over as I was jacking the cab up. Gun fell through shift tower hole, discharged and shot a guy who was servicing truck. Taught me a lesson in several ways. -
I don't know why but that story almost made me piss my pants from laughing so hard. I know it's not funny and a pretty serious incident but as long as you didn't kill the guy I suppose it's alright to laugh
as to the op my company covers that stuffhal380 and bubbagumpshrimp Thank this. -
Well it was even funnier.
I was at the old TA in Atlanta, about 1986. Had delivered a load the night before, but they could not unload me until next day. I was OK with that, went to TA to get oil changed. Now I was going through training to become a LEO in Florida, so I carried my pistol with me in case I was late getting back for class the next day. I was driving a cabover International, a Transtar. When I went to sleep the night before, I had placed the pistol on the dog box, "just in case".I forgot to put the gun up when I went to the TA. Anyway, drove over oil change pit, and got out. Mechanic began draining oil out as I raised the cab up. As it was going up, I heard something slide, then a big bang, then the oil changer came running out of the pit, hollaring 'HE SHOT ME ! HE SHOT ME!'.
Now here is where it gets funny. Nobody heard or saw what happened except me and the mechanic. The fella who was shot ran out, got in his car and left. I immediately got the shop foreman, who did not believe me at first. He called the police who came around. Still no idea where the worker was. Just my saying he was shot, and then he was gone. The detective, shop manager both thought I was lying. I showed them the gun still lying in the pit, but still no idea where he was. They finished my truck, I moved it out to the lot, and showed the detective about how I was raising the cab, and how the gun slid out the shifter hole.2 hours later, still no victim..38 shot to the arm. I thought I was going to jail, but when they finally found the hospital the fella had gone to across town, he thought a jealous husband ( not me ! ) had done the shooting.. I finally convinced the officer what had happened, and he let me go back to Florida, keeping the weapon.Next dayI called my attorney, he said Oh-Oh, you have a big problem. Told me to notify my truck insurance company NOW. They finally agreed to pay the threatened law-suit, since the truck was being repaired at the time. Some clause about extended liability during repair work. Anyway, all it cost me was my pistol which the City Of Atlanta kept.bobtrucks2204, Floorguy1, blairandgretchen and 2 others Thank this. -
As a company driver, you're probably better off not to have it any such insurance. If it becomes "common" for company driver to have insurance that protects them from their own negligence, it will become common for this "personal" pile of money to be gone after by lawyers and juries. You don't want to live in that world so let's not push that button.
Also, no personal liability you may have via your homeowner's or auto will cover you while in the employ of another and/or in that employers vehicle, and/or on that employer's time. This is another benefit of being a "company driver". Enjoy it.bubbagumpshrimp Thanks this. -
OMG!!!! I laughed so hard. I had a long week and I really needed that 10 minute laugh tonight!!! I'm still laughing writing this post. Thanks for sharing that story
