Getting CB Channels without a CB

    Is there a way to get CB channels without having a CB?

    Will "outdoor" walkie talkies work?

    No but you can get hand held CB radios. Not great range but they do work.

    I pick up CB channels when using walkie talkies around the property.

    Not really a cost factor, but my dad has some walkie talkies and if they would work, I was going to take them with me when I take my road trip this season (in my personal vehicle).

    I might as well by a real CB though because I'll need it later after I get my CDL and go over the road here in a couple months.

    For just receiving, those surplus military AM receivers are great.. you can pick up CB channels, shortwave, all kinds of neat stuff.

    But will still need a decent Antenna.

    I remember years ago, if someone was running a "turbocharger" (linear) in their house, you'd pick it up over your FM radio or record player. I've never had good luck with handheld CB's, as the range was about 10 feet. CB's are cheap, and I suggest getting a real CB and a good antenna.

    I think that's what I'll do. I found some at Walmart that looked relatively decent for around $100 and I'm sure I can find better deals elsewhere.

    Have a certain brand you'd recommend? I hear Cobra's name tossed around a lot.
