Wth a company you're legally bound to stay with them for a duration of time, if you leave before the contract is up you have a 3-4k loan on your hands

    Shaggy Thanks this.

Nothing against farmers, If your'e alive and have at least 2 limbs no ID needed = hired

Going through company CDL = you are trapped in a contract, School CDL = Free to go anywhere

Not to mention, most of the trouble a beginner has (in any capacity) is "backing" a trailer....and a Yard Jockey's primary job is to back trailers.

Iassume the farmer jobs don't pay that great. Are they usually individual jobs or do you get "hired" by a farmer to do multiple hauls?

I had my cdl in high school my senior year. My uncle and father were team drivers for JMI (Julian Martin) and even Rising Fast (remember that one anybody) for 0.08 cents per mile split and all the unloading/loading they wanted. So I have been around them my whole life so here I sit in North Little Rock Ar. @ Bruce Oakleys waiting on them to open in the morning to unload. Just letting you know if you know your job you can make it at 18 in this business. I started out driving for a company with auger trailers Lawhon Farm Services, now a part of crop production services, but you can get a job from a place like this for your experience. Helena Chemical always hires part time/seasonal/full time help depending on location and job performances. I was shown how to back up a truck way before learning to go forward because I had it hammered into me that "Even a monkey can be shown how to hold a wheel going forward! " or "Even a blind squirrel gets lucky every now and then."

This is why the handle of "Judge" was given to me because in l was always judged by being an 18 year old kid that had got out of high school and they thought I would know nothing about putting a trailer anywhere. But I have proved those wrong and even shown some old time flatbedder with 15+ years experiance on me some tricks they said that they would have never thought of before. When May comes I will have been at this job 13 years and can tell you this job is not for everyone.
You will not have anything in common with your friends and will slowly drift apart. Regional drivers who are home every weekend usually time goes by so fast you just seem to have time to wash clothes, say hello, grab a shower maybe a quick shave and be gone again. The job becomes your life, but I personally don't think I could do anything else.

Thanks! I guess only time will tell. I'm just very excited to do something with my life. I can't see me doing anything other then this. Oh well, I guess now I wait until I can get my CDL and see what work I can pick up. Sorry if I bothered anyone. Thanks again for all of your replies.

Go to the DMV and read the section on combination vehicles, airbrakes and general knowledge. These are the primary rest can come later in life if necessary. Just remember in life "The only dumb question is the one unasked..." usually.

Luckily I get to drive. At least that's something now. Hopefully I will learn to drive a manual soon.

My son started at 19 with no help from me. Pulling rice for a local. Elevator called poinsett rice. It wasn't easy every dime he made went into that old truck. Still does for the most part, but my point is he is making thus far with very little help from me. None financially just advise here and there. It can be done but it ain't easy
