I was at Mercer for about 5 years, around 2003 - 2008 Was great at the beginning. My engine went they fronted me 5k to fix it. What ever I needed, ran my ### off 150,000 miles a year. When everything started to crash and I believe the original owner stepped down and let his sons run it, it started to go down hill... My transmission blew out in NM and I needed 2500 to finish paying the bill. They left me stranded out there and had to find my own way back. That hurt. Long story short, I came up with the money, finally made it home. Lasted about a month after that and left. I know they didn't have to do anything, but the way they left me out there was bad. They even had another driver pick up my trailer and deliver the load I was under. Luckily, the driver bought my trailer back, he wasn't happy and told me he started to leave my trailer in Tx.

 

The sad truth is 98 percent of owner operators should of stayed company drivers. They just can't, or won't, think like a business owner.
As for the recruitment bonus, I can't fault guys for taking advantage of it, but personally I dislike it. I try to be as straight forward and honest about how it is here. I don't want someone questioning my motives over some pocket change bonus. For a lot of guys, me included, leasing to Mercer changed our lives for the better by leaps and bounds. If I had come here back in the 90s even I first started trucking I could probably have retired already. I wasted over ten years turning long hard miles. I just get so #### disgusted thinking about how much that cheated my wife and kids out of. I just don't want some guy to miss out on the opportunity to better his family's quality of life cause he thinks I am feeding him a pack of lies for some tiny recruitment bonus.

can I ask why if you were running 150,000 a year why you didn't have 2,500 bucks to pay for anything??? they help guys now still, must have been a reason they didn't help ya out maybe.

Spot on skateboard. Only reason they wouldn't finance him is if they didn't think he could pay it back. And if he was running that kind of miles, he had to of been one of those guys that just have to run coast to coast no matter what the rate is. I can't count the number of guys I've sat next to that will pass on thirty loads at 2.50+ on 700-90pmiles and then take the 1.50 3k mile load. As for break downs, I personally know two guys that have been into Mercer for over ten grand a piece.

I'll have you know, I worked today. I had to drive all the way up to mulberry to pick up my 5k lbs.
All joking aside, today was probably the hardest day I've ever had. I don't know what I did to my back but I can't even stand up without it hurting so bad my eyes water and I get dizzy. It's not so bad as long as I'm in a seated position but in any other it's like you hit me in the lower back with a sledge hammer. Oh well, nothing a fistfull of Advil and a hotpad won't cure. And now my wife has an excuse to pamper me for the next two days. Life is tough

A back brace would work wonders, wear it even if you are strapping and/or tarping. I carry one in my truck and got me upright in no time. They sell them at Walmart also.
