You should put an inline fuse in there too since the plug you cut off had the fuse in it. Ive had the same coleman for 3-4 yrs with no melted plug, but it did happen a few times before that. I called coleman and complained and they sent me a new wire and plug that has held up ever since. Had to take outside cover off to plug in the new wires.

The truck wiring still has a breaker for that outlet, so it should be safe

Get a TruckFridge, then you find out how worthless those 12 volt coolers are. The truckfridge is one of the best things I've bought for the truck. Over the years i've gone thru 4-5 coolers Broke down and bought the TruckFridge a couple years ago. There is no comparison.

True but its at least a 15 amp breaker/fuse verses 5 or 7 amps on the plug(can't remember). I wouldn't chance it to save $2.00. Any truck stop has an inline fuse holder in the CB section.

I have a fridge with a freezer, but I am out for 3-6 weeks at a time. It works really well, except the door sometimes comes open so I bungie it closed. I also have a microwave and coffee maker all hooked up to a 2000 watt inverter. It works well but you can't run everything at the same time. the inverter can't handle the load.

Here is a link to my fridge:

Truck I was on used an hook and eye to keep the door closed. Definately Fridge! Those iceless coolers are junk! I went to do some volunteer work. The milk spoiled in 3 days. Why? The cooler is offsetting by about 20 degrees from ambient temperature. The sunny day warmed the cab to 110. So much for the meals that required milk.

Those TruckFridges are great. I've got one of their freezers too and it works fantastic.
But if the folks don't want to spring for these as they are a tad pricey then get just a reg mini fridge from Target or costco and use it via a decent inverter. You will be amazed how little power these fridges use these days. They barely register on a good inverter.
So why mess with those coolers that are not designed for keeping food cool.

I have a Coleman. The hasn't melted. I used 13 months, it wouldn't keep anything cold enough in the summer. I put in storage, I picked up a small koolatron for $89.00 plus tax the first week of August 2014.. So far so good.. Its been better then the Coleman. The real test will be this summer. If I owned my rig I'd go the inverter truck fridge route , koolatron and other 12 volt coolers are just that a cooler not a refrigerator and cheaply made..

edit I had another Coleman and it did quit due to human error, other than these I went with out one
