My driver ran out of fuel

Yeah something doesn't add up..... a road unit with a 600 mile fuel range? What's on the side, a single 120?

No matter, you don't like him and you don't trust him. Pay the bill and route him home, pay him off and be done.

OP It's hard to say if you pay or he pays. I would terminate his employment. If he can't watch a fuel gauge, can he watch an oil pressure gauge? Next call might be the motor won't crank.
I had one driver that ran over some boulders to a parking lot he called, arranged and paid for tire and rim repair. Then called me to say all was ok.
I have ran out of fuel a couple times with different trucks. I drove a truck the only gauges that worked was temp/pressure for oil and water and the tach. Got so low I had to use starter motor to drive truck into the fuel island. The other time I was transporting a truck and I took 8 gallons of fuel from my load and put into my truck to get to fuel stop 4 miles away.

 

The driver should be responsible for the call out just like he would be responsible for a speeding ticket or parking violation. This "you own the truck, you pay for all screw ups" crap is exactly why there are so many useless drivers out there and why truckers pay is so poor. Contrary to popular drivers belief, trucking companies DON'T have a printing press in the shop printing out $100 bills at will. The more that a company has to pay for incompetent drivers mistakes, the less money there is to pay drivers. This story shows EXACTLY why I've always said that attitude trumps experience EVERY TIME. Give me a novice with a great attitude over a veteran who's attitude stinks any day. There ARE good drivers out there but they are few and far between

 

What he probably did was put 100 gallons in the truck then sold 100 gallons for cash to another owner op and pocketed a couple hundred cash hoping he could make it to his destination and afterburn would never find out

 

If I run out of gas I wouldn't even tell my boss about it…it's embarrassing...

But if you value him as a driver,$300 isn't big deal...

 

While you might have a moron for a driver, it is part of the cost of doing business. Write him up or something. But businesses have to eat the costs of their employees at times..Write it off as a business expense.

 

Sorry but you will more than likely have to eat that bill, this is what owning a company is, plus most state have laws against taking money out of a employee check, unless you have thing like this in writing when you first hired the driver, it is aggravating but that's the nature of the beast

 

before messing with his check? You might want to check the laws on this! You take money out of his check, he can cause you more problems then it's worth, like others mentioned? You could always rethink his continuing employment with you

 

If it was me an I ran your truck out of fuel I'd pay for the service call myself. It's not your fault he ran out of fuel. If he had a problem with that then he'd be looking for another job. He should man up an own his mistake.
