when doing an air brakes check everything is supposed to function correctly correct? What I mean is the tractor protection valve, the trailer protection valve, the service brakes, and the Johnson bar (or trolley valve as I learned it) is supposed to function normally and correctly during the test?

the reason why I'm asking is because last night when I got ready to leave Chemult after my 10 hour break to go to Livermore I did my pre trip and everything looked fine. Before I pulled out I did my air brakes test. Everything function correctly except for when I pulled the trolley valve. When I did that test my truck rolled down the hill slightly before I was able to catch it with the service brakes. Did not matter forward backwards the trolley valve would not function correctly. Also after dropping and recharging the trailer a couple of times to see if maybe there was a little bit of dirt or something blocking something the trailer brakes locked up and I could not move for over an hour before the trailer brakes slowly started to release and I could move again. Slowly at first but the farther I went the better they got. I was told that it was because they were cold that they were acting that way.

When I talk to Road Service they said it was a crazy waste of my time to be even using or touching the trolley valve that everything was functioning correctly because the trailer and tractor protection valve both work correctly and so did the service brakes at least that we know of. I don't think the trailer service brakes were functioning correctly when I was in town it was a little hard to stop I noticed it especially when I got to the receiver this morning late and was in a rush.

This is one of those moments I was seriously tempted to stop at the scale but they were closed.

Some trailers takes a while to air up and yes cold weather can be a factor. Instead of using your johnson bar, pop the trailer break and see if you still can move.

    Thank you. :)

I did try releasing everything. I was in a slightly downhill spot when I did my brakes test. I had everything released and had the truck in neutral and was just sitting there.

I'm positive that I charged the trailer completely as the truck was holding steady running and not at 130 psi. While the red knob was out the trailer did not move just when the trailer was charged up and I used the trolley valve. It still does this but did not do this yesterday when I performed the same test. I've never had one do this before.

I wouldn't use dot scales as way of getting a free inspection. Failure takes you out of service and goes against your csa.

Sounds like a sticking air valve in the trailer

None of what the OP describes is normal:

With the trolly valve you should be able to lock up the trailer brakes. You should be able to feel the trailer brakes with the trolly valve as soon as you push in the tractor protection valve. Within a couple of minutes, not hours, the, the air tanks should be at pressure on the trailer and the trailer brakes should release. At that point you should be able to lock up the trailer axles with the trolly.

Using the tractor protection valve is a valid test for the trailer emergency brakes but not the service brakes. They are two different separate systems that can fail individually. Always test the trailer brakes. It take mere seconds.

Trailer is looking for love in all the wrong places, apparently.

Are your trailer brakes out of adjustment.

    Good option.

I have done "tug tests" on trailers and barely felt any braking.

Pull the trailer brake handle down fully to get a 90 pound press. This is only going to work on self adjusting brakes. That will ratchet the adjuster to tighten. I have had to do it 5 or more times for some of our older trailers.

Thank you everyone. It is definitely the brakes on the trailer that's causing the issue. I got it into the shop so I can get off and ready for my next load and and tested the truck out on a different trailer it works just fine.

I talked to the shop and they said there was some kind of new valve that they were trying on these new trailers and he said he's had three of them come back so far with the same issue.

I have made a huge decision after this crap. I'm going back out as a team driver again. I'll let my Co-driver deal with dispatch. I can handle keeping him in line with finding issues on the trailers and he can deal with them nidjets. Others I'm going to transfer to the tanker division until I can find a local job.

For now this will allow me to continue to stay out here for a while longer. I do love it but it has become such a chore to fight for these repairs constantly.
