Hey guys, I was wondering about the possibility of starting an owner operator as team. I've had my license two years now and am a 3rd generation truck driver along with my brother. A friend of mine also has his CDL's and we are looking to come out of college in a couple of years and hopefully start a trucking bussiness together. We would like to start by owning one truck and teaming (for a year or two) in order to build capital faster with less expenses. My brother and father are/have been solo O/O but I lack any substancial knowledge for teaming as Owner Operators. So any knowledge regarding such a circumstance would be greatly appriciated.

P.S. I know the risks of starting out on your own at a young age, but unlike half the those on this page I have been around the industry since birth and have gotten to know my way around. My main concern is this particular issue since it is hard to find any information on it.

You can be best friends until you start living together in a small box 24/7...

There are some companies that pull high end freight that only hire team OWNER OPS. You don't hear much about them, but there IS a market.

There's teams running on the dedicated deal I'm on now - 5 loads a week, though they could push 6. That's up on $500k gross revenue/year . . . so anything's possible. Just depends on your financial situation.

Just depends on you. I teamed for over 9 years, and I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's all peaches and fun. It beats the snot out of you mentally and physically.

    Good luck.

If the $$ is going into separate households - it will be tough. Also living with someone in a rolling walk in closet - not easy...

    Good luck :D

Teaming is tricky. I've only teamed with about one person that it wasn't like beating your head on a stone. Other's, after a single trip it was nothing but obnoxious.

Being brother's could be a boon or it could be a curse. Go rent a storage unit and live in it together for a month, see how much you like each other at the end of the month... then imagine doing that for a year or two with only a couple days off every couple weeks if you're going OTR.

Based off your question are you looking for the business side of things or just want to know what it's like to team?

If you decide you want to go into business with your brother and friend from college, one of you needs to be the owner and the other 2 are employees. That way of it doesn't work out, it's easier to fire them then try and dissolve a partnership agreement.

Read Dave Ramsey's book, entreleadership. It's a good book in how to boot strap your startup and how to structure your business so it doesn't blow up.

I am not looking for comments on teaming, or really on how to run a business. (I have read Dave Ramsey by the way). What I'm looking for is information on teaming as O/O. For instance, like what freight is known to be best for such a circumstance, and any other information that might be helpful. The only reason we're interested in teaming is so that as a company we can draw in as much money as possible in the first year or two. This is so we can get a solid foundation for expansion in the future (as much money as possible would go to the company account. We've currently drawn up 5 and 10 year plans, thankful my brother has a company's as I mentioned before so we could go off of his expenses from owning multiple trucks.

The freight for teams is produce out of California to east coast. Very time sensitive and pays well. You need to stay above average $1.76 a mile on all loads. This would be your break even point. I started over 15 yrs ago and have been successful. Currently running 85 trks.

I just wanted to make sure. I was seeing people answering you about what it's like to team. If you've already done research on the operating of a business you're miles ahead of the rest.

Like wisedriver30 said, the best team freight is produce out of California or any other time sensitive freight that can't wait for a solo driver to get it across the country.
