I can't get my head around going down a steep grade relying on a computer to select the proper gear to hold us back.
Mega carriers are going to autos because they don't want to invest the time it takes to train new people to properly shift; they want meat in the seat immediately.DrtyDiesel and 6daysontheroad Thank this. -
My first experience with auto came about 6 months ago. They're nice in heavy traffic, but that was about all I liked about it. After 5 months pulling a smooth bore tanker and having the soup beat out of me I switched back to manual. I can control the surge a lot better with a manual . I also like more control over shifting on downgrades and slick roads.
BostonTanker Thanks this. -
Thank you! I have been operating a smooth bore tank for the last 13 months. Allison 5 spd auto, IH 4400 466 hauling waste fry oil, grease trap and food scraps. Besides the surge, not having an engine brake or exhaust brake to slow the #### thing down I chewed through drum shoes and brake adjustments. Give me a manual for that, and not no automated manual.6daysontheroad Thanks this.

Yes im turned you can easily slow down by downshiftig right. screw autos, now for me personally I wil have to conquer my fear on manuals
-
I don't like the idea of reaching over to fiddle with little tiny button to downshift. We all have out preferences
-
So you trust computers can do everything else but not help you drive.. Umm okay!
No its about fuel mileage -
Same.
I would of thought that a manual would be more fuel efficient, you decide when to change down or up and control the revs. Sometimes the autos are screaming or labouring and wont change gear.
Most vehicles are computerised these days, I wouldnt trust one to automatically park my car though. -

Parking you're car is not shifting gears
Companies are being forced to have fleet averages for fuel.
You think you're smarter then a computer and can shift better for fuel economy? Umm okay
