In my opinion each truck has its own way it likes to be shifted even if 2 have the same everything.. Takes a lil bit to find the sweet spot when first driving a different truck.

My general rule is go to 1400 - 1500 rpm and then up shift. Once you do this for two to three days and watching the speedometer it should become second nature. I hardly look at my speedometer or tach when shifting anymore. I just listen to the engine. I know that isn't the answer that you are wanting to hear but that is the only one I have to give.

May I ask why is this a rule?
Am I doing damage by moving the split or preselect in between gears?
I tried moving the select before I move the lever then I often get a "thunk". -
never have done it that way much. Always hit the range change right as I was slipping it out of gear and splitter while in neutral. Never had an issue.Rodeorowdy Thanks this.

The transmission manufacturers will tell you that you risk doing damage by not pre-selecting. I'm not real anxious to find out if they're right, so I do like they say. I don't mean flip the button 10 seconds before you shift, a second or so is fine.

I don't flip the thumb spliter 10 seconds before, I flip it just before ( as in a split second ) I take my foot off the throttle and move the lever to The next gear.
When I do that, I often get a "thunk".
But when I move the thumb splitter, the same time I shift the lever to a new gear, (as Coloradogreen stated)...
I haven't gotten a "thunk".
I don't want to damage the tranny but I continue to do that as I believe that is not as bad compared to the "THUNK" I get when I move the splitter a moment before. Fm -
I have learned with the 13 and it is still one of my prefered trans, but lately i am playing with auto's and i honestly start to like them a lot!!!

Pre selection is not the preferred method. It loads the tranny then a hard release when the clutch is disengaged.

Clutch, isn't that the thing you use to start out from a stop...then ignore until you stop again?
The modern transmissions have a sensor that doesn't preload or attempt to move the range gears until it's in neutral anyway. Years ago the manufacturers insisted you preselect your range before moving the stick...failure to do so would void any warranty if they could prove the driver didn't comply with recommend procedures. -
Go out to Eaton's skid pad and get a lesson on how to drive their transmissions, they scream pre-select the gear before shifting.
