Bridge blueprints in California are calced out with metric measurements. All the office people, foremen and CalTrans people carry around revenge of the nerds type conversion calculators. We in the crew started buying our retractable tape measures in the 10 meter format lol instead of the 30 foot. Then some genius came out with a tape that has metric on one edge and the standard American feet/inches on the other edge.

What is funny is that say, we had to drive pilings every 8 feet in a normal bridge footing, the spacing would be 2.4 meters on the blueprints. So some dimwit goes through standard measurment specs for everything bridge related, coverts to metric then we have to re-convert back to feet/inches

Mistakes can happen, I recall the Benecia Bridge, we were working on the land side going toward the water, another contractor working over the water to meet us. When they did the final calcs we were 7 inches too high and had to send guys up over 100 feet in the air to cut 7 inches off the false work and re-weld everything down. The young college puke in the office was yelled at so harshly during his firing, he left with tears.

But to keep with odd things seen at weigh stations, did see a truck in the ditch at the St Regis Montana eastbound scales once, evidently the guy parked and walked his paper work in or maybe just had to use the john, but whatever, he did not set his brakes.

wonder who the dummy was at Central that let that trailer out the gate. And the dummy driver didn't check his manifest? Simply amazing!

BobbyHill, I love your avatar! And because of your screen name, this talk reminds me of a scene from King of the Hill where Hank mentions "The metric scare of the seventies."

One of those lines that just makes me chuckle.

The odd speed limit is due to insurance but also to get you to notice the speed limit and get you to look how fast you're going.

The Lynden yard in Anchorage is 6mph, did a double take the first time I saw that. Makes no difference to me though, I drive 3 - 5 mph in any yard. Too much going on in any one direction at any given time to be in a hurry.
