Truckercane, the only way I would ever work for an o/o is as a regular employee with taxes held out and work comp. To actually qualify as an independent driver you have to be able to work for anyone at any time. He's just trying to avoid the expenses of having an employee, and you could both end up in trouble with the Infernal Revenoo Service
should i work for a owner operator (1099)

Just remember, as a 1099 contractor, you are on the hook for all Federal income taxes(Filed quarterly), all SSA taxes(both yours and the employer part). And depending on the state, you may be required to furnish your own workman's comp insurance and also you can be required to carry a liability policy, so when the other guy(4 wheeler) runs into you and sues you.
After all this, you may clear about 20 cents a mile. -
Bologna!!! If taxes were that cheap we'd ALL be running on a 1099.
25% of $50,000.00 = $12,500 (before per-diem allowance's and deductions)...how do YOU get away with paying $1,200 to $2,000?
On W2, I am paying (on average claiming zero) 17.5% income taxes. YOU are claiming that you pay right around 3% income tax on a 1099 (50,000 x .03 = 1,500).
People act like math don't exist.driverdriver Thanks this. -
I have nothing to lie about. So you're sitting there pointing fingers calling me a lier when in fact I am not lying. It's not that big of a deal where I am about to scan my tax papers here and show you. But I,claimed everything as an owner op would. That would mean chains, wipers, tires, lights, two phones, lap top, fax machine, printer, log books, phone bills,on and on and on. Also I have a business card through chase and everytime I eat or spend any money ON THE ROAD, I swipe that card. Then when the end of the year comes I print out the statements and claim them. Imalways had good years when it came down to taxes at 1099 or else I wouldn't have done it.bbt_387 and Cottonmouth85 Thank this.

Yes because in this industry is all about honesty right? Makes me wonder if you ever even sat in a truck.
I'm on here and I'm always going to tell you the honesty. there is things I've said that I should keep to my self in posts but I'm innocent until proven guilty.
On the side note it makes me wonder why after all this time you decided to go back and scan through old posts. Must be a lot of downtime for you. -
If you're w new driver try it out if you don't like it leave. You should tell him up front you're looking to own your own company or join in one in the future.
