in turns where I do not have to yield, can I take a turn in 7th gear instead of sixth? have fast would I need to be going after the turn to accelerate in it without stalling the truck? as far as dmv testing purposes, would it take points off to take the turn in 7th, then if not going fast enough to continue (based on answer to last question) downshift to 6th once turn was completed?

it is a Volvo 10 speed.

obviously the smart thing to do is to go to 6th before hand, but I am only wondering if I do not slow down in enough time to downshift into 6th before the turn. I get pretty flustered with it when making a right turn right after after downshifting moments before, and I cant slow down to 15 way before the turn or that would be impeding traffic.

anyway thanks for any responses I have my test later today.

So basically, you're charging the intersection and taking turns in the wrong gear because you think you're impeding traffic? Do I have that right?

I've often said that driving truck is more an attitude adjustment than anything else. No matter how fast you go, there will always be someone looking to get around the slow truck.

Slow early and grab the right gear before the turn. They don't deduct points for pissing people off but an examiner may consider you out of control doing 20 mph into a right hand turn.

    Good luck with your test.

Right turns in 5th, left in 6th. Right turns had more steering play than left. If it's a small 2 lanes round, u might even have to drive to income lanes to prevent your trailer from hitting the curb.

As far as dmv, the slower the better, get to 5th gear sooner before the turn

    Yes, you can.

I use to worry about getting or being in the way. Then I learned you must do what YOU need to do to be safe and in control. You can't control the stupidity of others, just do what is right.

It use to bother me when I was told I was number 1. Not anymore.

You are entitled to just as much road as speed racer, in fact, more because you need it. Take it. Use it.

There is too much going on and too much to look for when turning for me to be in 7th. I'll really be impeding traffic if I hit a kid on a bike or take down a telephone pole.
Between cars traveling on the road your on, trying to sneak past your trailer on the right and left, curbs, pedestrians, kids on bikes, poles, traffic coming from the road your turning onto, lanes shifting, reckless drivers, reading signs, ect... I need the extra few seconds at 10-15 mph to assess all of that info and act accordingly.
6th is too high more often than not... 4th is more like it .....
EVERY intersection is different EVERY time. Even if you make the same turn every day, it's different every time. Different lighting, different cars and drivers, different situations...
That's why we are professionals! ;-)

Worry about going slower than traffic from the comfort of your cab, or go nowhere and stand next to a rolled truck.
    That's tough

Points dually noted I had a dick teacher that would give me #### for slowing down too soon is the only reason that was in my mind I'll just. Allow myself plenty of room for the downshift
