Cummins 400 Jake brake

    How hard is it to add a jake brake to a mid 70s Cummins 400 big cam? And any ideas on approximate cost from a salvage yard? Looking at a 78 Peterbilt 359 with a 400 swapped in place of a 350, and it doesn't have a jake....

    Depends entirely on what your definition of hard is... It could be done in a day if the right person is working on it.
    Just make #### sure you have the right CPL number before you do go salvaging.

    I don't know if this is allowed but ATHS would be the best place to get info on that big cam, that site is full with nothing but guys and girls who live and breathe the old iron.

    If you do end up getting it post some pics, everybody loves a 359

    Or www.tecbrake.com. If you can get a used one you may still want a new wiring harness and switches. The tec set up will work with jake or cbrakes( Cummings version that came out in about 86).

    If you buy a used set make sure you get the rocker box bolts with it. Will be a micro switch on the fuel pump throttle shaft that you will need, and a micro switch on the clutch pedal as well. Used to be around 105.00 years ago for a Jake rebuid kit, have no clue what it would be now. Finding someone local that you can trust and can do the job is your best bet. Only takes a few 0.001 of incorrect adjustment and you have a recipe for a big problem. Good luck.
