You still need a class A. It's required for most of the large motor homes.

You are correct. School is not required. Anyone can get a permit and pass the test.

Wouldn't motor homes need class B? It's not a combination vehicle.

Ha ha ha. No, it's not!!! A CDL is for commercial operations. I know LOTS of people with a semi hauling horse trailers. I also personally know two people with the max size RV's and no CDL. Uhauls have air brakes but no air brake endorsement required.

    Here is the FMCSA rule.

Under Part 390, Subpart A - general applicability and definitions, Part 390.3 (f). Exceptions. Unless otherwise specifically provided, the rules in the subchapter do not apply to - (3) the occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation or in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise.

In the interpretation for 390.3 it states: Question 21: Does the exemption in 390.3 (f) (3) for the "occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation nor in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise" apply to persons who occasionally us CMV's to transport cars, boats, horses, etc., to races tournaments, shows or similar events, even if prize money is offered at these events?
Guidance: The exemption would apply to this kind of transportation, provided: (1) The underlying activities are not undertaken for profit, i.e., prize money is declared as ordinary income for tax purposes, and (b) the cost of the underlying activities is not deducted as a business expense for tax purposes: and, where relevant: (2) corporate sponsorship is not involved. Drivers must confer with their State of licensure to determine the licensing provision to which they are subject.

And just a side note. Pull over any RV and they have enough opened booze bottles to open their own bar. They have kitchen knives with a length that is illegal. The elderly mom has a plastic pill case marked
    S M T W T F S filled with pills and unmarked. ALL of these are illegal.

Okay question.. my truck and float weights 34,500 but that leaves me with a pay load of 45,500. Most shippers want a pay load of 48,000. My truck is heavy duty axles rated at steers 14,500 and drives at 42,000. My trailer is spread 2 axle. What do i need to do to legally haul that 48,000?

Most brokers list loads as 48,000 but are much less. You have to call. They don't want to list a little load that's 20,000 and 20' of deck space so you don't plan on picking up an LTL to go along with it.

The A in CDL-A stands for Air Brakes. If the vehicle has air brakes the person needs air brake endorsement which usually comes with a full CDL license.
