I heard a commercial on the radio yesterday for Shaffer trolling for drivers.
They spewed out the tasty numbers that most drivers drool over and gave the contact information.
Now , I've always been really quick with math computations in my head, so I did a quick cranial spreadsheet and was left bewildered.
Someone help me , please.
*At .48-.51 per practical mile...
*yearly earnings possible of $48-$51,000 for the TOP 50% of performing drivers.
My math tells me that if they ONLY pay mileage and nothing else... no loading , unloading , detention , drop/hook , layover , extra pay for fingerprintin etc... (which I don't understand why you would work for someone that made you work for free to start with) is that the TOP drivers are only moving 110,000 miles per year/2200week/300miles a day. How many miles are the average guys getting?? 90k ?
The 300 a day is what's crazy. They leave you guys sitting so much... uncompensated.
Pick up a load.. take all day... it delivers 400 miles away , but two days later. Sit there getting unloaded for awhile... maybe get loaded later that evening close by , maybe not, wasted day. RINSE AND REPEAT.
I see these poor guys sitting all the time in the truckstop when I stop to fuel or shower , maybe grab a bite. You hear the eavesdropped stories at the war table in the restaurant so i know this is accurate.
Not me. I can't sit like that. These companies can do better. They just don't CARE. Do the math. Don't bite on the overripe fruit.
Prospective employees... DO THE MATH

So you'd rather run 600 miles a day for 25 cents a mile?
It's what you take home that matters and the less work required for that take home the better I would think.
I've heard the same commercial but thought the numbers were more like what's posted in this print version.
Starting pay on this fleet is $.48 – .51 per mile. The top 50 percent of our fleet will average more than$68,000 per year.
Our average driver will earn $58,000 and the top 50% of our fleet will earn $68,000

50 K a year is still 50 K a year. For a lot of people, that's more than doubling what they make now. And they only have to work 6 hrs a day, and play video games the rest of the time........

It's not bad to make 50k without a 4 year degree.
Junkyarddog5958 and chris887 Thank this. -
My thoughts, exactly.

I'd rather do 700 miles a day at 45 cents per mile.
mitmaks, rabbiporkchop, Arkansas and 4 others Thank this. -
You calling me a liar ?? That's the way I just read that. No call for it. I didn't make it up out of thin air. Buy a calculator.
I won't respond with similar atrocities.
Have a nice day. Sitting in the truck stop. -
My point exactly.... and have something to do every day. Keep me moving
