Just got off the phone with the Schneider Bulk recruiter. She told me that contact lenses are forbidden and that I must wear my glasses at all times. Is this standard in the tanker industry? If so, this is a dealbreaker for me and I'll have to do either flatbed or dry van - which I don't mind, but I had my heart set on tankers.
No contact lenses for tanker drivers?

Sounds like a company policy. If you get chemicals in yer eyes the contacts can keep it from being washed out and can result in more damageRock 'n Roll Relocater, peterbilt_2005, Daria and 2 others Thank this.
-
They told me it's because some of the chemicals could melt the contact to your eyeball.
It's definitely company policy, prolly same with many others that do hazmat.
I hauled non-hazmat chemicals after my time at Schneider Bulk, they never said a word about it, even at the big chem plants.
I wouldn't let a silly thing like that stop me tho, I just wore the glasses for a year and moved on,, no biggie -
That's pretty much standard; chemicals will wind up between your lenses and eyeball, and you're screwed.
Daria Thanks this. -
I remember before I started hauling HAZ-MAT chemicals that it was a company policy thing.(not w/Schneider)... Bought 2 pair of prescription safety glasses for about $300 (tax write-off).
But was also told --- NO CONTACTS-- -
I used to do work at Mississippi Lime, in Missouri, and in their safety spiel video they stated you couldn't wear contacts. The first time there was four of us and we all looked at each other, as three of us were wearing contacts, and kinda chuckled.

That's the biggest waste of 15 minutes I ever had to endure, just to drive around and under a hopper and get honked at.
Canned Spam Thanks this. -
Well, I also got a pre-hire from Comcar CLT. If they say no contacts, I guess it's dry van or flatbed. I'm not sure why I can't wear safety goggles, but then again, I don't know the industry. I know this is picky, but I absolutely hate wearing my glasses as I'm conscious they are on my face at all times. I wore them for two years and that was more than enough. Not much bothers me, but I won't wear glasses during all my waking hours.

you do need eyewear with tanks.try another company that uses goggles.
-
You have to wear safety glasses in flatbed too...atleast at some customer
Guess it's either van or reefer
