My rig has a 13 speed hi profile tires 600 hp isx and the rear ends are pretty tall. I average 1350 rpms at 70mph..at an avg of 7 mpg pulling 30k. Its a no brainer really.

The industry that tells you its unlikely to get better mpg at higher hp.torque ratio are lying.

Old tech always wins over computer crap that crashes anyway.

Don't know much about them, but when I lived there Honey Transport was advertising all over craigslist .."Trucks run 75 mph and paper logs" I think their trucks run 70mph now but that's still above average

Don't fall for the "regional OR OTR" scam which is all to common with junk van/reefer companies. You run regional and when complaining about your dismal checks they'll give you the "well F'n A buddy you want to be home every week don't ya!" So then you'll stay out for two flippin weeks and make an extra 2 to 3 hundred a month. Whoop de.

Go tanker or flatbed, plenty of them run 70 mph trucks.

There are still plenty guys who own a few trucks, dont hire from the CDL mills, Have a senior driver with over 5 yrs with the company, allow the drivers to go the speed limit...
Trucks I hauled cars with were all capable of 85mph+, but rarely went that fast due to rough roads, and they didn’t hire just anyone with a pulse, if you required a little training you were trained by an experienced driver.
If you are paid percentage, you are more apt to try to operate economically and take care of the equipment, as it does effect everyone’s bottom line!
Them jobs are still out there, and yes you can find a job in craigslist, but most of the good ones are never advertised. Best job I ever had started with a little chat on the CB radio!

That's what Volvo had in mind when it released the XE package on the VN series.

If you're going to run 65+, try to recoup some of those aerodynamic losses with a lower cruise rpm.

My truck has the XE package and runs an overdrive I shift (.78 top gear) through a 2.64 rear end. My truck is set for 67 cruise/69 foot and when I pull a skirted trailer with a medium load (20-30k), I can average 7.5 mpg or better if I keep my idle time around 15-25%. At 67 it's running about 1200 rpm.

An added benefit to running low rpm's is if your truck has a DPF. Typically lower cruise speeds help oxidize the soot passively so it cleans itself out while driving. Less active regeneration cycles means less fuel consumed.

Exactly. I never understood why it took the engineers so long to figure the gear ratios/advantages out. Why, for example, do the majority of the semis out struggle to run over 65....cleanly and effeciently?

And DPF technology is old. Instead of using ceramic filters which clog why can't high voltage low amps be used to filter and burn the heavy particulars by using ion plates?
