Quoted from Cummins service manual. =) depends on motor also.

It is recommended by Cummins Northwest that a cleaning maintenance schedule after the first 200,000 miles of operations be established for your 2007 and newer vehicles. Even with active regeneration, ash build-up can lead to a high concentration of potassium which can cause temperature glazing (cold spots) or sintering in filter cells within the Diesel Particulate Filter. Overall filter life greatly decreases when large concentration of ash build up occurs in the filter cells, and the longer the build up, the more compacted the ash becomes, thereby decreasing the filter life expectancies. The end results are possible damage to the DPF and or increases in the time of the cleaning process.

He has a D13 and the 2250 and newer Cummins dpf maint schedule has been revised to come in line with with all mfrs. Due to the passive regeneration in 2010 models and the regen occurring at higher rpm, thereby higher air flow results in more complete ash removal. Recommended dpf maintenance interval is 350k to 400k.

Find the Cummins tier 4 final results not the interim testing. The interim suggests 300-350k the final recommends the 350-400k interval. The Cummins bulletin number I will have to find Monday when I go back to work.

Epa has mandated dpf cleanings start at 4500 hrs minimum approx 330,000 miles, Cummins testing has been close to 6100 before ash accumulation was too high causing bad cells and black holes. Level 1 clearings were sufficient to remove ash and produce flow back to 99.3% of of new. Test was performed on stationary unit at 89% load at 1360 rpm and only passive regents, not one active (parked) regen.

Cummins as of late ( past 3 years ) has been a real let down. Our company couldn't take the constant breakdowns that come along with Cummins and especially the DPF/regens. They ( our company ) has almost completely switched to the new Detroit,....what a difference.! Drivers are happy and so are the mechanics. I haven't had a regen issue since the switch to Detroit. It's bound too at some point give us some problems. So far, so good.

You can't do a parked regen unless you see it needed in the dash. Parked regen is only available when the ecm senses the need. You can hook it to VCADs and perform either a service regen or a crystal sublimination. Difference between the two is crystal sub injects DEF. Neither of them are available to the driver and can only be accessed thru VCADs. They reason to perform a regen after cleaning is to 1) make sure the assembly does not leak. Too many times I see trucks get towed in because some ####### driver knows he had an exhaust leak, blowing hot air into the transmission air line. Pops the air line gets stuck in gear and has to call a wrecker. BTW the air line is metric, 12mm, 1/2" won't fit don't even try just wasting your time. Second reason is to monitor the temperatures and pressures in the dpf. The soot level doesn't need reset as the regen process will reset it. Third reason is to try to activate pending codes or clear them out. If you are happy with you're workmanship and don't have any active codes go with it.

You should also blow compressed air thru the DOC in the reverse direction of normal flow, back out thru the inlet. You will get some soot from there too.

Awesome, Thank you So Much. I saved about $500 dollars doing it here as opposed to going to Volvo, but I think next time I will just take it to the dealer
