Great info I'll show my accountant and make sure I stay on the right path. As far as health insurance I bought off the exchange to cover us and my 21 year old daughter.
Average revenue needed to survive.

So going full owner with authority is very pricy to start and then reduces to more acceptable levels over time. Prime mentioned an insurance program thru them at a lower cost. I'm wondering if a few years of that would qualify or reduce my rate quicker.

Just "survive" or would you rather thrive? I can survive on gov't cheese, welfare and Obama phones and have all the free time in the world and no risk to life and limb from spending endless hours hurtling down a crowded interstate at 70 mph.
If you really "net" 80K in a year why not save it all for 2 years and pay cash for a new truck? 1.35/mi was barely survivable 20 years ago. -
with good fuel discounts you can save 5-to 10 grand a year. you will not have a problem making it. you seem to be able to adapt & know when changes should be made. I.M.O. most drivers that I KNOW... failed cause they could not contain their wasteful spending out side of trucking expenses. expect the good, bad & the ugly on here, it is a forum.
lisamomof4boyz and bomoto Thank this. -
I know my break even or survive rate is around 80 cents with 1.35 as my happy average with my expenses. My main goal of the post was to try and figure out what rate is needed to maintain to cover the additional increase in trailer, insurance and reduced fuel discount. I could finish another 20 years being a prime driver making what I make now with a smile but I'd get bored fast without the challenge of the next step. I believe I can better plan my loads than some guy who doesn't have my well being in mind. The randomness of the loads are OK but not optimal to a 6 digit payday.

I don't agree with most of your thinking but whatever...
You might want to take that spread sheet down . The prime exectutives probably wouldn't like their rates out on those 3 loads ....
I'm more in the $2 plus mile camp.... Than 1.35 with a team.blairandgretchen and bigguns Thank this. -
80 cents? Are you not planning on paying yourself a wageblairandgretchen Thanks this.

OK - I'll level with you now @bomoto
I've been playing devils advocate here.
The post from @RedForeman sums it all up.
There's a great deal you can learn here from lots of folks that have been in the game a long time - @Old Man is one in particular.
Usually, in Prime threads, this sort of conversation gets heated - FAST, from input from non-Prime sources. However, you posted in the "Owner Operator" section - so here we are.
Take the advice and take down the numbers, because I've looked at them , and I'm sure others have, and they only re-inforce facts, is that you're a much smarter man (and wife) to be a slave to this game. You don't need to jeapordize any current position you are in - I'm confident your company has enough money to pay someone to peruse on-line information.
Take the advice too , and remove your pride and ego from the match - in which case, as always (in any area of life) you'll learn and benefit a great deal.
Good luck - and I say that in a genuine way.

Bomoto,
I've been an owner op with my own authority for a little over a year and a half now. I will tell you that 80 cents a mile won't do it. Running a load for 80 cents a mile would COST me about 20 cents a mile. I think I run a pretty tight ship with low costs, I only have a $500 a month payment for truck and trailer together. My insurance is pretty low, around 7.5k a year. And my operating cost is right around $1.00 a mile. I think you must be overlooking something. I'm not trying to be a hater, or a troll. If you are smart you can make it with your own authority, but like other posters have said, load boards are where companies move their extra freight. Maybe I only speak for myself right now, but I have sat at home for the week, because I can't find anything paying more than 1.20-1.40 a mile. I didn't open my own business and take on all this risk to make 20 cents a mile and work myself to death. Maybe Prime taught you something that I don't know about, but every broker and carrier I talk to say the same thing about freight right now..... it is cheap and scarce. If you are asking my opinion, stay with Prime if you are netting 80k with them and find a better time to jump in on your own.Grijon, RERM and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Ty for the info. Just to clarify it's 1.35 average and 80 cents a mile net.. pre fuel which varies from 5 cent mile to 15 cent a mile depending on my luck and skill buying it.
