Are there any family friendly companies or schools out there that would work with me to get my CDL? My husband is already an OTR driver and I am a stay at home mom to our toddler.. We've been tossing around the idea of me getting my CDL and going out as a team with our daughter along as a rider... I know it would be possible if I waited until she is older, but if possible, we'd love to do this now... Leaving her with someone else while I go away to school is not an option, but if there is a company where she could ride along with hubby, then that would be ok.
Family friendly school?

Having a toddler living on a truck that runs a team operation? Really?

I never thought of this as an option. There are home schooling opportunities everywhere on the road just make sure you go to your local district office and sign up for the option. They should have a school curriculum that they can provide which should include books and manuals that can be adapted for your child.
I home schooled my kid for 18 months while she was ill and she was able to move ahead of her classmates.
Just know that you are going to be tired and she is going to get bored without a super structured learning environment.
If you work for a company that has lots of waiting around time it's not going to be a problem really. Kids are happier with their parents. But if you are go-go-go bumping docks, you may not have enough time in your schedule to educate her and grow her curiosity.
Best of luck!MrsWJAA Thanks this. -

Thanks Tequilasunrise, yes, we had plans to homeschool already regardless if we are all on the road or not. I only have to register through our home state and we have already chosen the curriculum that we will be using. We figured we would go slower than constantly on the go since we would essentially be making double the income of what hubby already makes as a team driver with both of us driving, so there wouldn't be the hard push to get miles under the tires.Last edited: Feb 23, 2016

Can't think of any company that would allow a toddler in a truck that is a team operation. Would any insurer even consider it? What a ludicrous proposition. I can hear the disbelief in the voice of any fm or dm being asked that

Some parents believe their needs come before their children's. I'm not here to judge, but, seems pretty selfish. I have a good friend who took his 8 yr old son out over the road for 2 yrs...homeschooled him in the truck. Made sure to stop, get hotel rooms, go sightseeing exct...to break up the monotony of OTR life...however, social interaction with peers of his child's age was limited, acquaintances he made all over the country never turned into friendships due to demands of runnin "next load". It took its toll...he is now a Day Trader, bought a home with the $ saved by trucking...now, his son leads a more normal life, grounded.Last edited: Feb 23, 2016
wore out and HalpinUout Thank this. -
Well......if that statement seemed rude there is no way to make on the road. Schooling isn't the problem I see. I wouldn't advise anyone to have there kids with them anywhere around truck stops etc.12 ga Thanks this.

.
Does your kid have cousins? Problem solved.... Skype or FaceTime...
Monotony of you going to a deadend job in misery, coming home exhausted and uninterested in anything but sleep. Working to pay bills... Hmmmmm
Or a child with both parent taking turns interacting in a real way. Reading books, visiting sites, completing school work, eating together... Being a family.
Sounds like a win-win.MrsWJAA Thanks this.
